DX QUICK TIPS - July 12, 2018 - Ron Howard (Guest)
July 12, 2018
RON HOWARD (Guest Contributor)
My friend in California, Ron Howard, always keeps me up to date with his listening adventures. Ron is active on the shortwave bands almost daily, and I receive email updates of his DX observations several times a week. From his listening post at Asilomar State Beach, CA here is a summary of what Ron has noted on the bands this past week, plus some links to his audio recordings:
AUSTRALIA.
5055, 4KZ. Recently had been hearing a 1151* cut off time and speculated was on a timer. July 9, at 1118-1150* (very close to 1151); playing Bobby Darin - "Dream Lover," Crowded House - "Don't Dream It's Over," etc. On July 10, was close to 1150:43* and on July 11, off close to 1150:35*, so yes definitely closing down via a timer.
At the end of June, Ron noted:
5055, 4KZ, 1204+, on June 26, noted off the air. June 27 back on the air again. Off the air again 1213+, on June 29. Sent off an inquiry to Al Kirton (general manager of Radio 4KZ). Appreciate his response received on June 30,:
"5055 has been on the air every day. Due to seasonal conditions, we are only running 5055 between 6 am [2000 UT] and 8 pm [1000 UT] local time. Our target area is 1000 km around Innisfail [Queensland - Ron]. The signal dies sharply in this region before 7pm [0900 UT]. Our times will vary with the seasons."
BTW - Rob Shepherd (Australia), advised me on July 4 - "Ozy Radio is currently off-air again with technical difficulties," so another chance to check for AIR Gangtok. July 5, noted strong OTH radar blocked 4835 from about 1155+.
BANGLADESH.
4750, Bangladesh Betar - HS, 1235-1242, July 9. The Monday only SAARC (The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) news bulletin in English; “Assalamu alaikum. This is Bangladesh Betar”; item - UN Secretary-General's visit to Bangladesh regarding refugees, etc.; less than semi-readable due to CODAR and CNR1 QRM; 1242 into Bangla.
BOUGAINVILLE.
3325, NBC Bougainville, on July 8, noted that Voice of Indonesia started QRM at *1056, in English; mixing with NBC. On July 9, at 1016 with local Bougainville news in English; today VOI *1116. On July 10, NBC with 1204* cut off.
Almost daily I scan 90m for PNG stations (and 3905), but for a long time now only 3260 & 3325 are active.
CANADA.
6030, Calgary - CFVP relaying CKMX (AM 1060), at 1223, on July 5. Again found that CNR1 was off the air; series of comedians; at 1315 "10-60 traffic." So is CNR1 off for maintenance here?
CHINA.
6030, at 1337, on July 6. Again found CNR1 absent here, leaving the frequency clear for reception of Calgary (Canada). First noted CNR1 off the air on June 27.
6035, FM99 via Yunnan, on July 6. What has been going on here? First noted by me on June 27 and now daily am hearing jamming that sounds as if from N. Korea; today at 1337, totally blocking any chance to enjoy reception of China. This must also be affecting reception of Bhutan (BBS) at an earlier time. The jamming of nearby Voice of Freedom on 6045, continues as before (no change). A most unpleasant development!
6165, CNR6, at 1337, July 6. N. Korea jamming continues here on this ex-Shiokaze frequency. Will be good when the jamming moves up to 7215, leaving CNR6 again in the clear.
[non-log] 7215, at 1337, on July 6, noted CRI is still absent here, leaving the frequency clear for good Shiokaze reception, but is just a matter of time before N. Korea jamming moves up here from 6165.
INDONESIA.
3325, Voice of Indonesia, via RRI Palangkaraya, on July 6, back to normal operation after yesterday's 1215+ carrier only signal; today started around 1100 (mixing with NBC Bougainville); at 1300, was fairly readable in English, as NBC was gone by then; the usual "9-5-2-5 kilohertz" intro.
At 1301, the VOI news (an interesting item about Argentine Ambassador to Indonesia expressed his appreciation for the launch of Broadcast Program Exchange with Radio Republik Indonesia today. According to him, radio is one medium that is relied upon by the people of Argentina in obtaining information. He said "Radio was an important tool in the past, but radio may still be the strongest communication tool in my country. Radio programs spread in Argentina. Everyone listens to the radio, in the car, while working, you hear people's comments." To date, four countries have signed cooperation agreements with RRI regarding the sharing of information/programs, namely Russia, Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia); followed by "Today's Commentary."
At 1314, "Today in History" (July 6, 1975, the Comoros Islands, off the coast of Africa, declared independence; this date in 1998, the Hong Kong Kai Tak airport closed, and this date 2007, the IOC approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games). Very enjoyable to again hear the VOI in English with decent reception!
KOREA NORTH.
3219.89 // 3920, KCBS Pyongyang, 1117-1124, July 11. Music program; clearly //, but 3920 is not on the air daily, whereas 3219.89 is regularly heard.
6165, The jamming continues here on July 10, at 1307, even though Shiokaze (7215) has been off this frequency for a number of days now; blocking CNR6 here.
KOREA SOUTH.
6045, Voice of Freedom, on July 8 (Sunday). Thanks very much to Amano-san for his generous, on-going assistance with the new VOF schedule (now 1406*, ex: 1506*) and some of their new programs, as provided via the "Now On The Radio" website.
1140 - "Aneun geos-i him-ida" program ("Knowing is power") - my audio http://goo.gl/RBvxFD
1200 - "Haengboghan Daehanmingug" program ("Happy Republic of Korea"); Ex: 1100-1150. My audio at http://goo.gl/1Tyu5F
1250 - "Namnam Bugnyeo-e haengbog mandam geug" program ("South man and North woman's happy comic theater"). My audio at http://goo.gl/v5n2oY
1300 - New program; name to be determined. My audio at http://goo.gl/HszPrv
1400-1406* (Ex: 1506*) - Full ID and "Yaga Pen Songun, Mail Sevyeok 0 (Young) Shiats 5 (Tassot) Shikaji" ("Nighttime broadcasting is from 0 o'clock [1500 UT] to 5 o'clock [2000 UT] early in the morning every day") and
"Cho Young Panson Nun, Off 6 (Yosoku) Ship 11 (Yolan) Shikaji Panson Gemnida" ("Evening broadcasting will be broadcast from 6 pm [0900 UT] to 11 o'clock [1400 UT]")
Station's singing jingle - "jinsil-e soli, huimang-e soli, jayu-e soli bangsong!" ("Voice of truth, Voice of hope, Voice of Freedom broadcasting"); ending with the very nice song "aleumdaun nala" (Beautiful Country). My audio of closing format, with the full song, at http://goo.gl/v64jv7
July 9 (Monday), surprised to hear non-stop easy-listening songs 0901-0954+, which was probably the "Bugnyeok-e ttuiuneun eum-ag pyeonji" program ("A letter of music sent to the north"); 1100 - "Hanminjog tong-illo milaelo" program.
July 11 (Wednesday), at 0959, with the end of "Bugnyeok-e ttuiuneun eum-ag pyeonji"(?) program; 1000, the "Bodo gwangjang" program ("News plaza"); 1020 probably the new program called something like "Han Min Jok Yokusagi"(?) (needs confirmation); 1040 new program (positive name not confirmed yet); 1100 "Hanminjog tong-illo milaelo" program.
MYANMAR.
5985, Myanmar Radio, 1218-1230, July 9. Monday edition of "Say It In English"; more misadventures of "Tom" and his aunt "Jennifer," who was learning to drive, during which she hits another car in a parking lot and "Tom" worries that the car hit belongs to his boss, "Mr. Harris".
PAPUA NEW GUINEA.
3260, NBC Madang (Maus Blong Garamut), 1048, July 6. Above the norm, even with summertime QRN (static); series of speeches in Pidgin; 1136-1141 comedy skit in Pidgin, with a lot of laughing; 1151-1200 religious segment (preaching and singing); 1201 NBC news in English (item about the execution of the Japanese cult leader responsible for Tokyo's Sarin attack in 1994, etc.); 1204 into "NBC Radio" relay from Port Moresby, in English; playing pop songs till cut off at 1222* in mid-song. John Wilkins (CO, USA) also "Noticed the enhanced PNG sigs" today, as we were both listening at the same time.
My three-minute audio clip (one-minute comedy, next minute nice Pacific Islands singing and final minute with religious singing), at http://goo.gl/ijXXdf
And again on July 9 at 1108 - NBC Madang ("Maus Blong Garamut" - voice of indigenous drums). Nice to hear the full ID for "NBC Madang, Maus Blong Garamut." July 11, from 1156 till cut off at 1219*; on the air slightly longer than normal.
TAIWAN.
9410-USB+carrier, Fu Hsing BS, 1222, July 11. While this isn't exactly rare, it certainly is off the air most days; announcer in Chinese, playing some music; one of their better receptions here; of course only possible as BBC's (Singapore) strong reception ended here about 1200*; Taiwan's other frequency (9774) remains silent.
As always, my thanks to Ron Howard for his detailed analysis of DX happenings from Asia and the Pacific. I am sure that our readers very much appreciate this updated information.
73 and have a great weekend everyone,
