Canadian 500 Watts - CKZU Visits Mount Evelyn!
6160 CANADA. CKZU - Vancouver. Big victory here for me!! Peeping up through the noise and mud was this one at 1025 with a talk program. Announcements and ID at 1030 as "That was a program from Deutsche Welle, and now we have another program from Deutsche Welle. I'm…… (announcer's name not caught) and this is CBC Radio 1". Monitored till 1045 when the signal became even weaker and collapsed back into the mud again. Best strength was around 1036 to 1042.
I did constant checking with the remote receiver in Nth Western Canada to confirm what I was hearing (complete with the usual 7 second delay), just to make doubly sure I was correct! Made it easier to confirm when I compared my reception with the remote by listening for the Canadian announcer, and the variety of accents (German, British, etc) from the DW program, plus short bits of music that came though quite well.
Locally, it was tough listening at times with CNR 6 on 6165 and CNR 2 on 6155, both very strong into Mount Evelyn at that time.
I'm not interested in QSL cards these days, but I wouldn't send a report based on this limited information anyway as it was too hard to get enough decent program detail from my own receiver (although of course it was coming in loud and clear on the Canadian remote receiver). If you're going to chase QSL cards for these things, you've got to be honest in your reporting......well, at least I do!! :-)
I'd love to get better reception for a recording though! Hopefully.....
Power is listed as 500 watts. Don't confuse this with CKZN which is over on the Canadian east coast and won't propagate to south eastern Australia because it's in broad daylight at this time! May 25. Also noted on May 26 but heard earlier at around 0915 and then faded by 1000.

Great catch, Rob! That's some serious weak signal work. Kudos to you for adhering to good QSL practices!

Hi Tom! Thanks for the nice comment. Appreciated!
DeleteYes, we moved house to a quieter location and the difference this winter on the radio has been profound! Despite the doom and gloom, there still some great DX to be had, isn't there?
I'm quite familiar with your QRPer and SWL sites - full of great info and well designed (not too cluttered like some!). Keep up the great work.
