Latest Tropical Band Logs

Local noise in the evenings and early mornings has been very low here at Mount Evelyn over the last few days. This has meant that a few usually hard to hear stations have made an appearance....very pleasing!

And my best wishes to our Indian readers of the blog on the occasion of your Independence Day yesterday!!

3219.9   DPR KOREA.  KCBS - Hamnung. Usual endless Korean talks noted at 1420 but with a very weak signal on Aug 15.

3255   SOUTH AFRICA.  BBC - Meyerton.  I haven't heard this one for quite a while now, but popped up on a good African morning at 1914 with FS English service. Fair on Aug 10.

3320   SOUTH AFRICA.  R. Sonder Grense - Meyerton.  Afrikaans light music programming at 1920, fair on Aug 10.

3344.9   INDONESIA.  RRI - Ternate. Discussion program at 1425, then telephone talkback at 1430 at a good level. This station's operations can be quite intermittent at times. Aug 15.

3900   CHINA.  Hulun Buir PBS - Hailar, Nei Menggu. Noted just before s/off at 1440 with final anncts in Mandarin. No music, no anthem….just stops! Poor signal Aug 15.

3959   DPR KOREA.  KCBS - Kanggye. Noted 1445 with Korean talks. This outlet is often much weaker than its // 2850kHz channel, Aug 15.

4820   INDIA.  AIR - Kolkata. Strongest AIR station on the band for Independence Day at 1447. Appeared to be in special programming mode for the occasion on Aug 15.

4860   INDIA.  AIR - Shimla. Indian instrumental music and anncts 1457, then brief Hindi ID at 1500 and into a bright music program. Fair on Aug 15.

4895   INDIA.  AIR - Kurseong. Fair signal with lots of talk and short bursts of music at 1505. Relaying 4820 Kolkata for Independence Day celebrations, in Hindi on Aug 15.

5015.37   MADAGASCAR.  R. Madagasikara - Antananarivo. Fascinating!!! Way up from its usually variable 5014 kHz, wondering up much higher than normal. AND with the frequency wobbling around mid-broadcast!! Listening in USB on, say, 5013.1 you can actually hear the AM frequency varying up and down. First noted at 1845 with lively Afro pops and occasional anncts in Malagasy. A quick ID at 1858 then suddenly off air. Aug 10.

5040   INDIA.  AIR - Jeypore. Relaying 4820 Kolkata on Independence Day and a solid signal in Hindi, lovely Indian songs with constant voice overs.
