Nigeria, Myanmar and the "Naughty" One!


My last post related to tropical band stations. This one features some DX back in the international bands. Highlights include Myanmar, Nigeria, and the "Naughty Radio Station!"  I also noted an opening on 17 mHz at 1130pm local time (1330 UTC) and 21 mHz at midnight local time (1400 UTC) - unusual for this time of year!
5952.43   BOLIVIA.  R. Pio Doce - Siglo Veinte, Llallagua. Discussion program first noted at 1035 but pretty weak by 1055. Reception of this station can be quite variable here, from very good to "missing-in-action"! Aug 14

5985   MYANMAR.  Myanmar R. - Nay Pyi Taw. Lovely instrumental music at 1155, Burmese ID at 1200 and a short news bulletin to follow. Fair but quite readable on Aug 14.

6089.86   NIGERIA.  R. Nigeria - Kaduna. Impressive signal at 2230 with ID and indigenous chants to multiple drums accompaniment, and occasional comments in Hausa. Monitored through to 2300 (9am local here) when final anncts and the national anthem before s/off. The signal strength was pretty watery by the end! Also het from CNR2 on 6090. Aug 11.

6120   UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.  TWR - Dhabayya. In the Tigrinya language at 1815 with a great signal to EAf on Aug 10. Tigrinya has quite a clipped sound to it; spoken by peoples of Northern Ethiopia and Southern Eritrea.

6155   SPAIN.  REE - Noblejas. One-hour French service to Eu on weekends only with s/on 2300, news and weekend magazine program format, fair but fading by 2330 on Aug 11.

7480   MOLDOVA.  R. Payam e-Doost - Kichinev. Nice ID in Farsi to ME at 1830 then into piano music, solid signal in the clear on Aug 10. Rumoured to be also on 5900 at this time but I can't hear anything there.

11875   UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.  IBRA Radio - Dhabayya. Swahili service to EAf at 1747, mixed with CRI's Russian, which signed off at 1757, leaving IBRA in the clear with the last few minutes of ID and freq anncts. Fair level Aug 10.

11915   ENGLAND.  IBRA Radio - Woofferton. ID and light religious programming in Arabic at 1730, lovely signal on Aug 10.

12070   ENGLAND.  IBRA Radio - Woofferton. Moves up here from 11915 kHz at 1800 for the Arabic service to to CAf, and avoids Riyadh's 1800 s/on on that freq at this time. Great signal Aug 10.


 15420   TAIWAN.  R. Free Sarawak - Paochung (site not confirmed). The "Naughty Radio Station" is back!! S/on with a "warm-up" song in English at 1057, then into the usual lovely RFS intro music at 1100, with IDs Iban. Monitored the program for over an hour. Not particularly strong here as the 19mb is not at its best propagation-wise at this tie of year, but should improve towards spring and summer…..but nice to hear it back again, Aug 14.


 17530   VATICAN.  VOA - SM Galeria. Somali service to EAf, great signal at s/off 1358, when the band is normally closed at this time of night for us, Aug 15.


 17615   SAUDI ARABIA.  BSKSA - Riyadh.  at 1350, this freq runs // 17625, just 10kHz away and both freqs aimed at Sth Asia for their Arabic service. Not sure why they do that…..any ideas? Also heard at barely audible level on // 21505. Aug 15

17705   SAUDI ARABIA.  BSKSA - Riyadh. At a fair level in Arabic service at 1330 when the band is normally closed here, Aug 15.

17810   GERMANY.  AWR - Nauen. Surpirsed to hear this one so well at 1335 just after scheduled s/on when the band is usually closed. Mandarin service to China on Aug 15.

21630   ASCENSION IS.  BBC - Ascension. S/on 1400 with the 30 min Hausa service to WAf, very weak and when the band is not usually open at this time. Should improve into our Spring and Summer. Aug 15.

21670   USA.  WHRI - Cypress Creek. Very weak in English to Af just after their s/on 1400, Aug 15.
