MICRONESIA: The Cross Radio - Recorded Excerpt

THE CROSS RADIO

Pacific Mission Aviation

I heard a nice signal from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) the other night. Not a particularly strong signal but quite readable nonetheless from The Cross Radio in Pohnpei. My radio log reads:

4755.5   MICRONESIA.  The Cross PMA - Pohnpei. A clear signal tonight although audio was somewhat low at 1020, but quite good for 1kW. The usual religious programming plus addresses for correspondence and handouts. ID at 1039 as "The Cross Radio is a ministry of Pacific Missionary Fellowship. You are welcome to join us every Sunday morning at 9am for our worship service." Then a short religious message from The Edge program with Chip Ingram. Then followed the Christmas song Feliz Navidad. Dec 12.

Here's a short recording of part of that broadcast:

The station has been running an FM service since 2007, but also requires shortwave to service listeners over greater distances. It is a Christian ministry of Pacific Mission Aviation.

The station and antenna are located in the village of Ninseitamw on the island of Pohnpei. You can Google Map the exact location using the following coordinates:

N 06° 57' 56.7" E 158° 12' 17.3"

As the FM frequency only services Pohnpei Island, the shortwave outlet is used to cover up to 1600 km to the outlying islands of FSM, plus the Marshall Islands for a combined total potential population of 140,000 islanders.

The shortwave antenna is nothing fancy - a quarter-wave vertical and the power is 1 kW. The elevation is 65 meters ASL, so there is plenty of ocean for a nice take-off of the signal. The station provides islanders with fixed-tuned, solar-powered FM and shortwave radios to its listeners.

The address is:
