EARLY MORNING DX

EARLY MORNING DX

Although still recovering from my shock reception of Radio Candip, Bunia, Dem. Rep. of Congo earlier in the week (click here for the R. Candip post), I put in another early morning listening session today. There's plenty to hear on the shortwave bands at the moment!

7237.1v   UNIDENTIFIED. Believed to be R. Ethiopia - Geja Jewe. Hoping to hear the English service when first tuned in around 1635, but coped an almighty het on this freq from CRI's English service on 7235. Using the USB mode, I noted fragments of piano music around 1640, but it was too hard, especially with the added interference from RA-Shepp and Riyadh also on 7240. Came back to it at 1656 after CRI had s/off, but needed to retune down to 7236.9 - it seemed to have moved 20 Hz in 20 min - impressive! Definitely something there by retuning in LSB mode but still too hard with the 7240 kHz QRM spoiling the fun. Plenty of carrier but the audio was just not making it through the hash consistently enough for good copy on Jan 24.

7390   FRANCE. R. Denge Kurdistana - Issoudun. S/on 1600 for Kurdish to WAs, long talks after the opening ID. Signal strength was good, but sandwiched between big China signals on 7385 and 7395 made it hard going. HFCC registration is Moldova but other lists are saying this is via Issoudun, which is probably right. Jan 24.

7590   UZBEKISTAN. Nth Korea Reform Radio - Tashkent. Korean anncts at 1556 with background classical flute music (one of those pieces where I know the melody well but I can't, for the life of me, remember the name!). Fair signal to s/off 1600 on Jan 24.

9400   ARMENIA.  R. Sadaye Zindagi - Yerevan. Noted final anncts and ID in the Dari service at 1527, then into Pashto programming at 1530. Good signal on Jan 24.

9965   PALAU. Nippon no Kaze - Medorn. Earnest talks in Korean at 1545, fair signal from the KHBN txers on Jan 24.

11510   MOLDOVA. R. Denge Kurdistana - Kichinev. A huge, easy-listening signal at 1535 with a strikingly soulful song accompanied by Kurdish instruments, followed by more dance-like songs. Entertaining programming with a powerful signal to WAs on Jan 24. Changes to 7390 via Issoudun at 1600.

12125   PHILIPPINES. VOA - Tinang. English to SAs at 1550, fair signal but marred by DRM QRM 12120 on Jan 24.

15320   VATICAN. R. Veritas Asia - SM Galeria. A very happy, light-hearted Filipino talk show, with laughing, chatting, between two announcers. Really sounded like an old-time radio show. Plenty of English words and phrases included in the chat and many IDs for R. Veritas Asia, at 1515 with a beautiful signal on Jan 24.

15390   BULGARIA. ESAT Radio - Kostinbrod. No jamming (for a change) on Jan 24 when tuned in at 1710 to hear Amharic news  and an ID at 1718. Excellent signal on this scheduled Friday freq!

17575   FRANCE. AWR - Issoudun. Somali service to EAf at 1644 with a station annct before a series of musical items, including a rather lilting song with accordion accompaniment. Good signal until s/off 1700 on Jan 24.

17870   BULGARIA. R. Xoriyo - Kostinbrod. Noted for the Friday service at 1607 with a long talk in Somali, a short burst of music then an ID (sounding like "Radio Xoriya …. Ogadeniya") at 1619 and into more talks. There appeared to be some light noise jamming on the freq but this didn't really bother the signal at this location on Jan 24. Scheduled for Mon and Fri only. Don't confuse with R. Inyabutatu, which is scheduled for Sat only on this freq/time.

73's and have a great weekend everyone!
