DX FROM AROUND THE WORLD

DX FROM AROUND THE WORLD

As we come to the last few hours of 2014, here's some notes from my log book gathered over the past week.

120 mb AUSSIE DX

Not really DX for me but certainly for many of our international readers interested in these stations!
2325   AUSTRALIA. ABC - Tennant Creek NT. Local breakfast program 1927, 5 min news 1930, then back to breakfast programming. Runs // 2485 kHz ABC - Katherine NT which is the stronger signal. As the morning light took hold, both signals faded by 2000 (7am daylight time), Dec 29.

2368.5   AUSTRALIA. R. Symban - Peats Ridge NSW. Continuous Greek music at 0930 with a fair signal on Dec 27. Some days during summer, it can be heard fading in around 0815, while other days its more like around 0930. Then noted again on Dec 29 with a fair signal at 1926 with long Greek music items, but faded into the morning by 2000.

AFRICAN DX

5066.33   D. R. CONGO. R. Candip - Bunia. Very weak signal at 1902 with what sounded like a live and passionate speech in French plus studio anncts. The signal strength suddenly picked up a little at 1907, and then some African vocals were noted at 1917. It took all the resources of the new Yaesu FTDX3000 to dig this out of the Ute QRM that regularly sits right on this frequency. Always good to hear this station, although it's usually a struggle from this location, Dec 29. Check out my write up of Radio Candip in the December issue of The Spectrum Monitor.

5950   ETHIOPIA. Voice of Tigray Revolution - Addis Ababa. Fabulous signal at 1836 with interesting (and long) local music selections and occasional Tigrinya anncts. Slight QRM VoVietnam 5955 on Dec 29. Here's the recording from this broadcast:

6110   ETHIOPIA. R. Fana - Addis Ababa. Astonishingly strong signal on Dec 29 at 2031 in the Oromo language with many mentions of "Hannah Montana"! Miley Cyrus song at 2034. Seemed to be an entertainment report program. Into some local Ethiopian songs around 2045. Short ID and s/off annct with anthem at 2058, Dec 29. Here's the recording:

7200   SUDAN. Sudan Radio - Al-Aitahab.  Arabic talk at 2053, ID 2057, 2058 Sudanese song, 2100 time pips then ID as "Huna as Sudan, …. Omdurman", then into news until s/off 2107. A good clear signal on Dec 28.

ASIAN DX

6185   CHINA. China Huayi BC - Chengdu. Mandarin news at 1010, at first underneath VoKorea's English service but improved to equal strength by 1200, Dec 22.

7220   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. Mandarin news reports with live crosses, at 1215 to NAs, Becomes clear of QRM once VoKorea's Mandarin service leaves the freq at 1157, Dec 22.

9390   THAILAND. R. Thailand - Ban Dung. English to Eu 1940 till 2000 then into German programming, very good signal but with some transmitter hum. This hum was much less noticeable when listening in SSB, Dec 28.

9745   TAIWAN. Voice of Kuanghua (Kuanghua Zhi Sheng) - Kuanyin. Long talks and interviews from 2003 to past 2100, with occasional short music themes. Also occasional IDs as "Kuanghua zhi Sheng" or similar. Good signal but suffers from the usual CRI Esperanto co-channel QRM until 2027 s/off, then Kuanghua is in the clear, Dec 29.

OTHER LOGGINGS

5955   AUSTRIA. VoVietnam - Moosbrunn. Lovely signal at 1825 concluding the English service to Eu and beginning the Vietnamese service at 1830, Dec 29.

7205   FRANCE versus CHINA. I mentioned this clash in another post in early December. CRI's English (via Xian) to EAf and RFI's French (via Issoudun) to WAf at 2115 continues to be a problem, and must certainly be causing mutual interference in some parts of Africa where the signals overlap. I'm surprised that neither station has made an effort to fix this yet, Dec 28.

7300   ENGLAND. R. Akhbar Mufriha - Woofferton. Long Arabic talk with christmas themed instrumental music in the background at 2120. Choral item at 2141, ID and s/off 2144, good signal at the start but weakened by the s/off, Dec 28.

7345   ROMANIA. RRI - Tiganesti. Noted shortly after s/on 0633 with English to WEu. Then a break in transmission for a minute at 0636, back on for about 20 seconds with a Romanian language lesson, then off again. When the carrier was present, there were loud crackling sounds, like a lead needed jiggling! Several attempts were made to get the thing going between 0640 and 0643 during the Inside Romania program. By 0644, the carrier had stabilised, the broadcast returned and remained on till s/off. However, the intermittent crackling continued although not as frequent as earlier in the transmission. Dec 29.

7405   USA. R. Marti - Greenville NC. Spanish to Cuba at 0650, fair signal, s/off 0700 on Dec 29.

7455   USA. WYFR - Okeechobee. American preaching till 0659, but couldn't ID the show title as suddenly the WRMI ID and address cut in over the top. At 0700 Overcomer Ministry took over, good signal and running // 7570 on Dec 29.

9400   FRANCE. Denge Kurdistane - Issoudun. A monster signal at 1923 with some sort of Kurdish rock music, then an impassioned speech with wind instrument backing - strange but interesting programming, eventual s/off at 1957, Dec 28.

9440   ASCENSION IS. BBC - Ascension. French current affairs program at 0717 to WAf, fair signal through thunderstorm noise, Dec 29.

9620   ENGLAND. VOA - Woofferton. French current affairs program at 2120 to CAf bearing 182˚ with a fair signal. Then changes to the Pinheira txer (Sao Tome) at 2130 bearing 20˚ for the Bambara service to WAf but it was barely audible by then. Considerable QRM from the stronger co-channel Spain, Dec 29.

11735   BRAZIL. R. Transmundial - Santa Maria. Gentle, happy preaching and lovely pop style songs at 0945, ID at 0952, good signal Dec 22.

11950   MADAGASCAR. R. Japan - Talata Volonondry. French to WAf at 2050 with the Monday Japanese language lesson, good signal till s/off after time pips at 2100, Dec 29.

17700   KUWAIT VOA - Kuwait. Hausa to Nigeria 0720, not a strong signal but clearly and easily heard. Discussion program with many mentions of Nigeria, Dec 29. Aoki has this as Sao Tome, but Dan Ferguson confirms that it's indeed on Kuwait's rotatable antenna as per HFCC registration.

73 everyone. Have a happy and safe New Year!
