FROM THE LOG BOOK
February 25, 2015
Reception conditions at Mount Evelyn has been difficult during the past week. Several days with high local thunderstorm activity kept me off air. And when it wasn't stormy here, it was in other parts of Australia, resulting in high atmospheric noise on the bands. However, things have improved in the past 48 hours, and the results of my listening are listed below. There are two audio clips - both from Sudan. Hopefully, you can find something of interest to you!
4930 BOTSWANA. VOA - Moepeng Hill. Fabulous signal at 2034 with a wonderful Afro music program, entertaining listening on Feb 23.
4940 SAO TOMÉ. VOA - Pinheira. s/on 2030 with the 30-min news in Hausa, poor signal on Feb 23. Nowhere near the strength it used to regularly maintain in "the old days", and certainly much weaker than the Botswana outlet on 4930 kHz.
4949.72 ANGOLA. R. Nacional de Angola - Mulenvos. Canal A service in Portuguese, weak signal with discussion program at 2018 on Feb 23.
4990 CHINA. PBS Hunan - Xiangtan. This is listed as s/on 2100, but I often note it around 2000, as on Feb 23 in Mandarin.
4996 RUSSIA. RWM Moscow - Taldom. Time signal station coming in with a stronger than usual signal at 2004. Also heard with a good signal on 9996 and a weak signal on 14996 kHz at the same time. Listed on all three freqs as 10 kW, Feb 23.
5010.96 MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. A wobbly old carrier at 1957 with a music show and Malagasy anncts. Switch to SSB and get the heterodyne going to listen to the carrier dance around the frequency. Fair to poor signal strength on Feb 23.
5066.33 D.R. CONGO. R. Candip - Bunia. Is more regularly heard these days now that the CW marker station appears to have gone, although the frequency is still subject to other digital signals on occasions. Noted at 1815 with Afro music and French chat, poor signal on Feb 24.
5915 ZAMBIA. Zambia NBC - Lusaka. Radio 1 service at 2103 with a telephone talkback program in a local language, good signal, Feb 23.
6030 ETHIOPIA. R. Oromiya - Addis Ababa. Anncts in Oromo with Ethiopian songs and dance music. A good signal at 1910 but still struggled under the more dominant Bible Voice's co-channel Russian service, Feb 24.
6100 BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA. R. Serbia International - Bijeljina. French service to Eu at 2150 about equal strength with co-channel CRI's Arabic service to NAf. Two minutes of interval signal (in its numerous variations), then into English with ID and news at 2200. However, CRI beams to SEAs in Mandarin at this time and flattens Serbia. A pity! Feb 23.
6120.03 TURKEY. VoTurkey - Emirler. Turkish to ME with a music program at 2142, big signal and somewhat off-freq on Feb 23.
6145 FRANCE. R. Algerienne - Issoudun. Arabic to WAf at 2140, good signal on Feb 23.
6175.09 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. VoVietnam - Dhabayya. Off-freq for the German service to WEu at 2117 with soft spoken anncts and music till s/off 2126. Slight het from CNR1 on 6175, Feb 23.
6200 TIBET. PBS Xizang - Lhasa. Tibetan service with pleasant music anncts at 2110, fair signal on Feb 23.
7205 SUDAN. Sudan Radio - Al-Aitahab. Up from the nominal 7200 kHz allocation, and can be heard on either freq these days! Very good signal with Arabic discussions and occasional local music selections at 1850, Feb 24.
9500 SWAZILAND. TWR - Manzini. English program "The Way of Christ" at 1840, ID "Speaking hope to the world, this is TWR", then an African song to end the English transmission. Interval signal then into the Juba language service at 1847. Nice choral song with accompaniment on thumb pianos!! Good signal on Feb 24.
9505 SUDAN. Voice of Africa - Al-Aitahab. I missed the English service this morning which ends at 5:30am local time here (slept in!), but caught the Hausa broadcast at 1835 UTC with news, good signal but with some deep fades at times, Feb 24.
9575 MOROCCO. R. Medi Un - Nador. French current affairs program at 1831, poor signal on Feb 24.
73 and have a great weekend everyone,
Rob Wagner VK3BVW
