FROM THE LOG BOOK
APRIL 3, 2015

A few listening notes and new frequencies from the past week:

6090   ANGUILLA. Caribbean Beacon - Anguilla. Female American preacher noted at 1001 to suddenly off at 1004. Believed to be Car. Beacon, which has been intermittent in operations over recent weeks. Mar 26.

6134.83   BOLIVIA. R. Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Nice to hear this one so early in the LA DX season at 1012 with extended talks by a female announcer, occasionally interrupted by a few seconds of Andean flute music. Easily separated from VoFreedom 6135 and no jamming made its weak signal easier to copy, Mar 26.

6185   CHINA. China Huayi BC - Fuzhou. Bright and breezy chat in Mandarin and pops at 1030, good signal on Mar 26.

7490   USA. WBCQ - Monticello ME. At 2120 with a long discourse of the medical problems between two men on a talkback program (the announcer was Allan Weiner….I think!) - grossly over-detailed and totally unnecessary - but very entertaining. Then they ambled over to world politics and conquered all those problems in about 10 min, too! A high level of opinionated BS was noted in the discussion!! I don't hear this station very often here….possibly a good thing, too!! If I started listening to too much of this stuff, I could possibly end up believing some of this rubbish!! Funny stuff! Fair signal in LSB to avoid R. Algerienne via Issoudun on 7495 kHz, Apr 2.

9730   ROMANIA. RRI - Tiganesti. English to WNAm at 0310, NF for the A15 season, fair signal on Apr 3.

9800   MADAGASCAR. DW - Talata Volonondry. Now that the Kigali, Rwanda transmitter facility is closed, the English service to EAf at 0400-0500 now comes from Madagascar and can be heard with a good signal, as on Apr 3.

11560   MOLDOVA. R. Miraya - Kichinev. At 0335 with an interview on infrastructure in South Sudan. NF x 9940. Weak signal at first but improved by 0430, and should get stronger as winter approaches here, Apr 3.

11635   USA. WHRI - Cypress Creek SC. American female preaching 0435, fair signal on Apr 3.

11695   GUAM. BBC - Agana. A new hour-long transmission at 0900, allegedly aimed at Vanuatu....about two weeks too late! But I guess it's the thought that counts!! Interesting to see BBC using KTWR's facilities for this broadcast. I wonder how long it will last.....  Apr 3.

11710.77   ARGENTINA. R. Argentina al Exterior - General Pacheco. Argentinian ballads and general conversation in the English service at 0330. A fair signal but suffers QRM now that TWR Africa via Dhabayya has moved to 11710 for the A15 season.

11970   FRANCE. R. Japan - Issoudun. English to SAf at 0500-0530 is now on this NF x 9770, with a strong signal, Apr 3.

13650   IRAN. VOIRI - Kamalabad. Italian service s/on 0620 till 0720, NF x 15085, strong signal but also with a strong background hum on Apr 3.

13660   OMAN. BBC - A'Seela. A good signal can be heard from the BBC on this NF in the 0400-0500 time slot for the service to ME. Apr 3.

15120   NIGERIA. VoNigeria - Ikorodu. French service to Eu with news at 0708, fair to poor signal with a noisy whistle-type of hum on Apr 3.

15420.13   UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. BBC - Dhabayya. English current affairs program at 0425, good signal but considerably off-freq on Apr 3.

15489.96   AUSTRALIA. Reach Beyond Aust - Kununurra WA. S/on 0730 with English to Oceania till 0800, good but slightly off-freq on Apr 3.

THE SPECTRUM MONITOR - April issue now available

This month's TSM has another contribution from myself for The World of Shortwave Listening column. The title is "The QSL Card - At What Cost?" There are some other great articles this time around, too, including a review of the new Yaesu FT-991 transceiver by Mark Haverstock K8MSH, and a report on the recent annual SWL Fest by Thomas Witherspoon K4SWL. Also, Cory WA3UVV has written an excellent article on how to care for batteries when using handheld transceivers - some important information there! Plus there's all the usual features and columns covering a wide variety of interests in the radio hobby.

The Spectrum Monitor is an online downloaded magazine in PDF format. individual issues are available for only US$3, or a 12-month subscription is only US$24. Well worth the investment! Find out more at:

That's it for now. Have a great weekend everyone.
