As governments shut down radio, the BBC world service is a lifeline
In the week when Apple’s Beats 1 radio station was launched – “Worldwide. Always on . . . It broadcasts 24/7 to over 100 countries from our studios in Los Angeles, New York and London” – there was also discussion of the BBC’s latest global audience measurement figures. The most striking thing in the report, which tracked listening habits and how they had changed over the past year, was how short-wave radio – in rural and poorer areas where there is no FM, no cable and no electricity, it’s still the only way of tuning in – is under increasing threat from something as basic as jamming. It sounded like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise, at 10 Hz, giving rise to the "Woodpecker" name. The random frequency hops disrupted legitimate broadcast, amateur radio, and utility transmissions and resulted in thousands of complaints by many countries worldwide. This informative online article has some seriously remarkable photographs of the antenna system!!

Radio Days in South Sudan - To reach people in a conflict, sometimes low-tech is the best tech.
While mobile phones and online social networks are pervasive in South Sudan’s urban areas, in the country’s rural regions many people still rely on traditional means of communication – primarily radio. Radio active after the quake - Community radio stations were destroyed by the earthquake, but many are still on air
The studio clock at the fifth-floor studio of Chautara's Radio Sindhu was coming up to 11:56AM on 25 April. Technician Guras Gurung was adjusting the sound levels on her console. Suddenly, everything started shaking violently. Syangtan stopped mid-sentence. Computer monitors fell, the walls started cracking and there was dust everywhere. Read more at:
