STATION NEWS

VOA

My thanks to Mauno Ritola for alerting me to this new information. Since last week's coup d'etat in the African nation of Burkina Faso, the Voice of America has stepped up its French services to Africa. During the weekdays I have observed the station from the following VOA relay sites:

9765 kHz  SAO TOMÉ. VOA - Pinheira. New 30 minute French service to Af from 2200. Much talk of the coup in Burkina Faso. A weak signal that eventually faded by 2215. Another weak signal was also noted on // 11850, also Pinheira. However, there was no propagation into Mount Evelyn from additional parallel freqs of 13670 and 15120 (both via Botswana). Interestingly, all four freqs were monitored via the Twente remote receiver in Europe, Sept 21.

9885 kHz  BOTSWANA. VOA - Moepeng Hill. A new extended service to Af noted from 0630 to past 0730 in French with a very good signal.  Scheduled s/off is now 0830. Apparently, also broadcasting on 6180 and 13830 but nothing heard here at Mount Evelyn on Sept 21.

BBC
The BBC has revised its broadcasting schedule in Farsi with a new time and frequency. The station has been noted at Mount Evelyn signing on at 0430-0530 UTC (ex 0230-0330) on 13730 kHz (ex 9425 kHz) via Kichinev, Moldova. This started out as a good signal but weakened later in the broadcast. The parallel freq 15410 kHz via Tashkent (ex 11895) was also heard but was quite weak there. A third freq of 9670 via Dhabayya could not be heard at all here on Sept 23. Thanks again to Mauno for this information.

NORTH KOREA
Two articles have appeared in the last few days concerning the importance of radio to North Korean citizens. It makes interesting reading, so check these out!

FROM THE LOG BOOK

Reception conditions over the past few weeks have often been poor, due largely to solar storms. So it was great to finally hear a few Latin American signals coming through last night.

3310   BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cochabamba. A weak signal with what appeared to be a news program at 1000 after ID. Faded by 1045 on Sept 22.

4055   GUATEMALA. R. Verdad - Chiquimula. First noted at 1105 with a talk program and instrumental music, fair to poor signal on Sept 22.

4747.55   PERU. R. Huanta Dos Mil - Huanta. Music programming at 1110, weak signal on Sept 22.

4810   PERU. R. Logos - Tarapoto. Music programming and excited announcing at 1010. A weak signal on Sept 22.

4524.45   PERU. La Voz de la Selva - Iquitos. Weak signal at 1115, seems to have been quite irregular during this recent winter DX season, Sept 22.

4925.21   BRAZIL. R. Educação Rural - Tefé. Weak signal at 1020 with music programming, has not been regularly heard here this year, Sept 22.

5052.45   BOLIVIA. R. Pio Doce - Siglo Veinte, Llallagua. Long passionate talks at 1030, fair to poor signal on Sept 22.

5980   PERU. R. Chaski - Urubamba, Cusco. Talk and music programming at 1040, weak signal on Sept 22.

6090   JAPAN. R. Japan - Yamata. Interval signal at 1055 then into the Russian service at 1100, a surprisingly good signal on Sept 22.

9395   USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. A weak signal (as is often the case with this station) with an English program on US politics tinged with religious overtones at 2234, Sept 21.

11760   CUBA. R. Havana - Bauta. Papal mass for visit by Pope Francis to Cuba at 2215. Good signal and also heard on 11840 (fair level), 13740 (weak), and 9710 (barely audible), Sept 20.

17540   ENGLAND. RTE Dublin - Woofferton. All-Ireland football final beaming to SAf, noted with quite a weak signal and difficult listening at 1302, fading in and out on a night when the K-Index was up at 5. It came up a bit stronger at 1320 but was lost by 1330. Also scheduled on 9470 via Dhabayya but nothing heard here on that outlet, Sept 20.

73 and best DX to all.
