RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER - PART 1

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER

PART 1

A few weeks ago, I found an old Kenwood R-5000 receiver. In the first of a short series of YouTube videos to be posted during the coming months, we lift the lid on this fabulous piece of gear from the 1980s/90s. We'll begin to clean up, restore and modify this legendary radio to (hopefully) its former glory!

Here's Part 1 - Viewing at full screen HD is recommended.

73 and good DX to you all.

  1. I've seen several writings and video re the R-5000 and the hot power supply. From what I've been able to determine, the 12VDC power draw is a couple of amps. I'm wondering if it feasible to simply remove the old hot tranformer-based supply and substitute much cooler modern switching supply...like those providing 12vdc to many laptops. thoughts????

    1. Hi Allen, Yes the 12vDC draw is around 2 amps. I guess you could put in a smaller supply to replace the old iron transformer type. However, care would need to be made about the type of switch-mode supply selected, as many of these are very noisy RF generators in themselves. Indeed, some of the laptop supplies are the worst offenders for emitting RF hash. For me, I'd rather connect the DC leads to an external stable linear supply, which is what I have done here in the shack. Thanks for the comments. Regards, Rob.
