RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER - PART 3

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER
PART 3

The stock-standard AM filter supplied with the R-5000 was a pretty terrible device, resulting in poor selectivity and barely adequate audio in the wide setting. Well....perhaps I'm being a little too harsh! But really.....Kenwood could have done a lot better than this. And in fact they did, by selling an optional higher quality AM filter.....for more money!

But the International Radio Corp has an even more desirable filter available, and that is the one I've chosen to install in this old radio. This short video goes through the process. Viewing at full screen HD is recommended.

  1. Rob, have you found any web pages specific to the R5000 repair such as battery replacement, PLL unlock problem repair, keyboard debounce fix? I google them but get lots of hits for the TS440 and TS940 and know the R5000 is merely the receiver portion of the TS440 but the mechanics are a little different. I have not found pages specific to the R5000. Have you?

    1. Southerner - I have two pdf documents on file that relate to battery replacement and keyboard bounce. I must stress that I don't know if these will work as I have never tried them. You perform these fixes at your own risk. I have uploaded these to my Box cloud account for you to download. I'll keep these files there for a week then take them down. Hope you find them of use. 2. Got them. Thank you. I am still trying to find that battery or battery box in the manual. Same for the TS940. I new about the one battery in the 940 but there are 2. Your PDF of the battery mod looks like it might add a battery box rather than a solder in lithium battery replacement.

    3. Yes, the battery is very hard to find in the circuit. Go to page 83, find IC50. You'll find it to the right of IC50, near diodes 51 and 52. I have not replaced my battery yet. But I believe it is located behind the front panel. Hence the reason why the PDF probably went the way of a separate battery pack located in a more convenient position, rather than having to take off the the whole front panel. The battery is a CL2020, but not easy to find...or so it would seem. Panasonic make a VL2020 - could this be the same thing? Not sure.

You don't have to go down the battery pack route. You can just re-solder the new battery in over IC50 if you want....probably easier, as it could be many years before you have to change the thing over again! I hope this helps, Jim. Let me know how you go with the replacement!

    4. Found it. Thank you. I was sure it would have been a CL2032 like the TS940 originally had. I even have some CL2032's with solder straps I got from Newark about a year ago. I also picked up some CR2450's and CR2477. I saw them in Jeff King's great TS940 pages but looks like those are now long gone! I thought the TS940 would be the same as the TS440 but looks like even the R5000 is not the same as the TS440 even though it is the receiver section from the TS440. I do like the idea of soldering the battery over IC50 but if I do get into the rig then will probably just replace the battery in it with one of my CR2032's as I am sure I will not have to change it again in my lifetime!
      Thank you for your help.
