STATION NEWS

PAPUA NEW GUINEA
There have been some very good signals coming out of PNG over the past few days.
It's great to hear that a few of these stations are still on the air, even after many have fallen by the wayside due to broken shortwave transmitters and movements to FM. NBC - Madang was noted on 3260 kHz with songs and Tok Pisin anncts at 1028, interview program at 1032, fair to good reception. On 3325 kHz, NBC - Bougainville had local news program at 1010 in Tok Pisin. The signal strength has been poor here recently, but on May 24 it was quite good on this evening despite the rather high atmospheric noise, and even improved to a very strong signal by 1115 UTC, with no sign of the co-channel Indonesian station. Also watch out for NBC - Milne Bay (Alotau) on 3365 kHz. Once again this was monitored on May 24 with talks in Tok Pisin at 1017 and local PNG pops at 1021. Canned anncts in both English and Tok Pisin at 1116, fair to good signal. Transmissions can be rather irregular from Milne Bay, but hopefully we will hear it on a more regular basis now. And Wantok Radio Light - Port Moresby is still active on 7325 and can be heard here from about 0900 but battles against the much stronger CRI and Shiokaze stations on the same frequency at various times.

USA
WTWW - Lebanon TN has been coming in on 9475 kHz with American preaching at 2345 UTC and a fair signal on May 26. Have you seen the WTWW antennas and transmitter building from the air? There's an impressive video that I posted the link for back in January 2015 - a Quadcopter view and quite interesting! Check it out at http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/wtww-from-air-quadcopter-style.html

EGYPT
I don't know how they do it, by Radio Cairo has outdone itself again today with one of the most horrendous examples of audio I've heard in recent times.
I monitored 9315 kHz for their English program (scheduled) at 0303.....at least I'm guessing it was English - very hard to tell! Talk and occasional music. If you are familiar with the sound of an overworked cement mixer grinding away on a load of sand, gravel and water, then you have the joyful sounds and dulcet tones of Cairo's magnificent transmissions proudly presented to the world. Egypt's own unique carrier was at fair strength but otherwise the content was just impossible to copy. And when the Arabic songs started up, it made the most astonishing electronic-sounding noises imaginable. Quite surreal and downright spooky! One station to listen out for if you are in need of comic relief. May 27.

FROM THE LOG BOOK

Tropical band Latin American reception has been rather scarce so far this year. One night I heard no Latins at all on the 60mb, then the next night a few stations surfaced, as I've listed below. However, as we move closer to mid-winter conditions here Downunder, signals should pick up - or at least I hope so! It's been nice to also hear the 49, 41 and 31 metre bands coming alive with winter daytime signals. These should also improve over the next few weeks.

3905   INDONESIA. RRI - Merauke. Music programming with Indonesian pop songs at 1040, occasional anncts. Quite distorted audio (over-modulated?) at times but a strong signal nevertheless on May 24.

4845   BRAZIL. R. Cultura do Amazonas - Manaus, AM. Pleasant Brazilian pop ballads at 1003, but strangely no anncts in the 15 minutes I monitored the station, fair signal, May 25.

4875.1   BRAZIL. R. Difusora Roraima - Boa Vista, RR. A poor signal through the noise with largely talks and chat at 1018 on May 25.

4925.2   BRAZIL. R. Educação Rural - Tefé, AM. A weak signal at 1022 with talks, hoping this improves during winter as it was a regular in 1025 between June and September, May 25.

5024.92   PERU. R. Quillabamba - Quillabamba. Noted at 1025 under the Cuban R. Rebelde with talks and distinctly Peruvian melodies. Best copy was when Rebelde was in "talk mode" and the Peruvian is tuned in LSB. A fair signal on May 25.
