DX QUICK TIPS - JULY 22, 2016

DX QUICK TIPS
July 22, 2016

Having driven to nearly the top of Australia (got as far at Cape Tribulation on the far north east coast), we are now slowly making our way down the east coast....but we are still very much in the tropics. This brief report comes from Cardwell, Queensland, located between Cairns and Townsville. There has been much unseasonal rain over the past few days, but it looks like that has passed and the sun is now shining again....but it's also a bit humid here for a southerner such as me!!

The receiver is the Tecsun PL-680 attached to a random wire about 6 metres long. Monitoring was done on the evening of July 21, inside the hotel room with its usual man-made noise problems. As can be expected, because we are closer to the Asian continent at this location, the loggings below are predominantly from that part of the world:

5875   THAILAND. R. Thailand - Ban Dung.Vietnamese service to SEAs at 1103, fair signal.

9635.9   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. Network 1 with Vietnamese news reports at 1010, fair signal.

11600   TAIWAN. RTI - Paochung. Good strong signal at 1000 s/on for the Indonesian service.

11665   MALAYSIA. RTM - Kajang. Wai FM service with pop music chat and interview program in Malay at 1016, fair signal.

11840   GUAM. KTWR - Agana. Sign off anncts in the English service to Oc at 1025, fair signal.

11865   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. Dead air at 1027 showing the supreme leader's transmitter humming away merrily. Then at 1030, the hum disappeared as regular audio began for the Japanese service with the usual hoo-haa and fanfare, fair signal.

11870   ALASKA. KNLS - Anchor Point. English service to EAs at 1035 with a religious-focused talk. A weak and somewhat shaky signal.

12035   MONGOLIA. VoMongolia - Ulaanbaatar. Japanese service at 1040, strong signal but with occasional broken audio from a likely technical fault. Pleasant Mongolian pop music at 1043.

13650   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. English to SEAs with political preaching at 1055 and a military song at 1057, fair signal and fair audio quality.

13695   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. English service to Oc at 1051, good signal.

HAMS IN TURKEY STILL OPERATING

You may have seen reports over the past few days that after the failed coup in Turkey, amateur radio licences in that country have been revoked. This information appears to be incorrect and a statement to that effect has been released by TRAC, the amateur radio body representing Turkish operators. HOWEVER....given that the President has suspended thousands of teachers, academics and public servants, it could still be possible that Turkish ARO's could indeed be restricted or stopped in their operations. Let's hope not!

73 from tropical far north Queensland, Australia!
