DX QUICK TIPS
September 20, 2016

Yes, the sunspot cycle is going through its downturn and everyone is noticing just how quiet the higher shortwave frequencies are becoming. But it still pays to check out frequencies above 15 mHz because there are still days when propagation conditions are quite favourable for long distance reception of shortwave signals...even at nighttime! All the logs below were noted 1300 and 1500 UTC (between 11pm and 1am here at Mount Evelyn, in south eastern Victoria) on September 18. Quite a surprising list really! And, I've left out the many Chinese transmissions that were heard, too!

15390   GERMANY. Athmeeya Yatra Radio - Nauen. Changeover between minority SAs languages at 1445 with ID clearly noted. Fair to good signal.

15450   ENGLAND. RFE/RL - Woofferton. Tajik to CAs with a talkback program at 1442, fair to good signal.

15470   PHILIPPINES. Vatican R. - Tinang. Hindi service with (I guess) a religious song done in a Indian style! Weak signal at 1440.

15500   SPAIN. REE - Noblejas. Live Spanish football match at 1425. At 1434, someone scored a "GOOOOOOOOAL!!" Fair signal.

15505   BANGLADESH. Bangladesh Betar - Dhaka. Urdu music program at 1420, weak signal but should improve in the coming summer months.

15565   MADAGASCAR. VoTibet - Talata. Tibetan service at 1417, weak signal under CNR 1 jamming.

15580   SAO TOME. VoA - Pinheira. English to EAf at 1412 with a discussion on USA's relationship with Russia, weak signal and surprised to hear it at this time.

15620   PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Bocaue. Javanese language to Indonesia at 1410 till s/off 1430. Weak and variable signal.

15650   GERMANY. VoA Deewa R. - Lampertheim. Pashto service to Afghanistan with news at 1407, good signal.

15690   GERMANY. R. Farda - Biblis. Farsi to Iran, music program at 1404, strong signal.

15735   UZBEKISTAN. R. Japan - Tashkent. S/on 1400 with English news to SAs, fair to poor signal.

17530   VATICAN. VoA - SM Galeria. Somali service to EAf at 1345. Strange reception with generally weak signals but occasional bursts of signal peaks every now and again.

17670   IRAN. VOIRI - Sirjan. Indonesian service with a commentary at 1310, poor signal but should improve over the coming summer months.

17735   THAILAND. BBC - Nakhon Sawan. Uzbek service to CAs at 1320, good signal.

17770   SRI LANKA. AWR - Trincomalee. In the scheduled Isan language at 1325 with alternating announcers. A quick spasm of SAs instrumental music and then suddenly off-air at 1328. Weak signal. Isan is the collective name for the dialects of the Lao language as spoken in Thailand. It is spoken by around 20 million people in northeastern Thailand and in Laos. The sound of Isan is very similar to Lao.

17810   GERMANY. AWR - Nauen. Mandarin to EAs at 1330 with religious songs in English, good signal.

AND FINALLY.........

73 and good DX to you all,
