EXCELLENT PROPAGATION BRINGS WONDERFUL DX

EXCELLENT PROPAGATION BRINGS WONDERFUL DX

Certainly over the last week or so, we have had a wonderful period of very good shortwave propagation. In my last DX QUICK TIPS post, I focused on some pleasing night time signals heard on the 15 and 17 mHz parts of the the SWBC spectrum. But, I wasn't planning to do another post so soon a couple of days later listing some fantastic transmissions from the 90, 60, and 49mb! Anyway, here's my most recent loggings.........

3260   PAPUA NEW GUINEA. NBC Port Moresby - Madang. Two chatty women at 1027, good signal on Sept 22.

3310   BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cochabamba. Anncts at 1000 then a pop song at 1001. Rapid fire anncts and chat at 1003. Making it through the S7 local noise on one of the few occasions this past month. Faded out by 1100 on Sept 22.

3330   CANADA. CHU - Ottawa. This was a surprisingly good signal for this time of year here at Mount Evelyn on Sept 22. Compared this to the previous evening when it could hardly be heard above a whisper. Noted at 0950, its 3kW transmitter was making the distance easily!

3320   SOUTH AFRICA. R. Sonder Grense - Meyerton. Pop music programming with Afrikaans anncts at 2029, fair signal on Sept 23.

3325   PAPUA NEW GUINEA. NBC Bougainville. News in heavily accented English at 1015. Canned annct at 1020, then into Tok Pisin programming from 1021. Co-channel RRI - Palangkaraya was heard weakly in the background with singing/chanting, but Bougainville was "rocketing" in on Sept 22.

3344.9   INDONESIA. RRI - Ternate. Not often heard here these days, but a weak signal noted at 1010 with music programming on Sept 22.

3955   ENGLAND. KBS World R. - Woofferton. German to Eu at 2053, fair signal in the noise till s/off at 2100, Sept 23.

4774.91   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma, Junín. Nice pop song with Andean overtones at 1029, ID at 1021 with canned anncts and adverts. Fair signal on Sept 22.

4949.75   ANGOLA. R. Nacional de Angola - Mulenvos. Plenty of carrier but a woeful modulation (as usual) at 2049 with a discussion program, Sept 23.

4955   PERU. R. Cultural Amauta - Huanta. Noted a weak signal at 1037 with conversation. Not heard much in the past month and monitored in LSB to avoid some local heterodyne rubbish, Sept 22.

5010.6   MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. Pleasant unaccompanied choral selections at 2010, a very solid signal and good modulation on Sept 24.

5910   COLOMBIA. R. Alcaraván - Lomalinda, Puerto Lleras. This is the first time I have heard this station in 2016. Previously, it was such a regular, but not any more. It was off air for quite a long time in the first part of the year. A fair to poor signal with lively songs and talk at 1041, nice to hear it back again, Sept 22.

5950   ETHIOPIA. VoTigray Revolution - Addis Ababa. Some type of music request show with phone-in listeners and groovy local music at 1931, easy listening from this booming signal on Sept 24.

5952.4   BOLIVIA. R. Pio Doce - Siglo Veinte, Llallagua. Another one rarely heard here in 2016. Weak signal with songs at 1045. QRM from Overcomer Ministry 5950 kHz, but Bolivia heard OK in USB mode, Sept 22.

5980   PERU. R. Chaski - Urubamba, Cusco. Snippets of Andean influenced music heard from a weak signal at 1050, faded out by 1055, Sept. 22.

7205   SUDAN. Sudan R. - Al-Aitahab. Entertaining music programming at 1910, commentary in Arabic at 1918, fair signal until QRM from VOIRI's Italian service s/on at 1920, Sept 24.

7585   UZBEKISTAN. North Korea Reform Radio - Tashkent. S/on 2029 with opening ID and anncts in Korean to the background music of the Trumpet Concerto by Joseph Haydn. Then followed a commentary. Good signal with only light ute QRM, Sept 24.

9645.41   BRAZIL. R. Bandeirantes - Sao Paulo SP. Songs and anncts at 2125, a weak signal. This is via the Antarctic path and is typical of propagation on this band around the southern hemisphere's vernal equinox (on Sept 22). At this time of day, there is just enough daylight and darkness across the South Pole to allow for signals to propagate between Australia and Brazil. Sept 23.

9724.9   BRAZIL. R. RB2 - Curitiba PR. Very weak signal at 2135 with a possible religious talk, via Antarctic path, Sept 23.

9730   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. French to Eu at 1945, fair signal and only light QRM from co-channel CRI-Kashi's Portuguese service also to Eu, Sept 24.

9818.92   BRAZIL. R. Nove de Julho - São Paulo. Very weak signal via Antarctic and swamped by CNR 2 on 9820 at 2150, Sept 23.

11700   BULGARIA. R. Biafra - Kostinbrod. A rather vigorous political talk on Nigeria in accented English at 1955, ID 1959 then into music, weak signal on Sept 24.

12040   KUWAIT. VOA - Umm al-Rimam. Service to EAf in Amharic noted between 1845 and s/off 1859, and running // 12080 (via Woofferton), 12110 (via Lampertheim), 12140 (via Ban Dung), and 13860 (via Woofferton), all with white noise jamming to varying degrees. courtesy of the Ethiopian government, Sept 24.

So, turn those radios on and start listening!!!

73 and have a great weekend everyone!
