STATION NEWS

AUSTRALIA
You may have seen from my recent post on the ABC's return of the Northern Territory shortwave service after a two-week absence. All frequencies are back and well-heard both here in Australia and in many parts of the world. But be quick! Dear old ABC may decide to take the service down again....for good!

BHUTAN
Over the past several days, a number of DXers and shortwave listeners around the world have been monitoring the Bhutan Broadcasting Service. Ron Howard (CA, USA) reports:

6035 kHz - BBS, anomaly on Sept 14. Running well past their usual sign off time; 1217 and still on the air at tuned out 1330; announcer in vernacular; usual brief break for indigenous music (1218); 1221-1229 indigenous music/chanting/singing; 1229-1259 non-stop monologue; BBS theme music; news(?); 1318-1330 EZL singing. Very unusual for them to be on this late.

In addition, reporting in the WRTH Facebook page, Gerhard Nakuru (Cuba), Tudor Vedeanu (Romania) and Mauno Ritola (Finland) all noted Bhutan in the period between 1830 and 1920 UTC, which is quite unusual.

TARGET: SUDAN
The broadcasts of Radio Dabanga can be quite readily heard in many parts of the world. Although it's mainly a "talk"station, I especially enjoy listening to Dabanga's occasional African music selections. The latest schedule for this station is as follows:
0430-0600 on 11645 (via SM Galeria)
0430-0600 on 13800 (via Talata-Volonondry till 0530, then via Nauen till s/off 0600)
1530-1630 on 15150 (via Talata-Volonondry)
1530-1630 on 15550 (via SM Galeria)

THAILAND
The current schedule for Radio Thailand (HSK9) is as follows:
1100-1200 on 5875 kHz (1100 Vietnamese, 1115 Khmer, 1130 Lao, 1145 Burmese)
1200-1430 on 9390 kHz (1200 Malay, 1230 English, 1300 Japanese, 1315 Mandarin, 1330 Thai, 1400 English)
1800-2115 on 9390 kHz (1800 Thai, 1900 English, 2000 German, 2030 English, 2045 Thai)
0000-0330 on 15590 kHz (0000 English, 0100 Thai, 0200 English, 0230 Thai)
0530-0600 on 17640 kHz (English)
1000-1100 on 17850 kHz (Thai)

All these transmissions from Radio Thailand are via the Ban Dung site.

FROM THE LOG BOOK

Propagation conditions have been quite good over the past week, and some excellent DX signals have made their way down to Mount Evelyn. Some of these notes may be of interest to you, too.

3210   AUSTRALIA. Unique Radio. - Halls Creek NSW. Woeful signal at 0950 barely rising above the noise with talk. Change of announcer at 1000, occasional music. Sept 11.

3480   KOREA REP. Voice of the People - Kyonggi-do Koyang. Korean commentaries at 1010, good signal and cutting through the local noise very well. No jamming either! Sept 11.

4905   TIBET. PBS Xizang - Lhasa. S/on at exactly 2050 with ID in Tibetan, Chinese national anthem and opening anncts, fair signal, Sept 8.

4930   BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. African pop music show, pleasant listening, 2015, fair signal, Sept 8.

4940   SAO TOME. VoA - Pinheira. Noted s/on 2028 for the weekdays Hausa service to WAf. The old-style Yankee Doodle prelude, which you don't hear that much these days. A weakish signal just rising above the noise. This 30-min daily broadcast is the only transmission from Pinheira on this frequency now. English broadcasts replace Hausa for the weekend broadcasts. However, the Botswana outlet 10 kHz below has a much stronger signal than this Sao Tomé outlet.  Sept 8.

5010.17   MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. Lively African music programming at 2040, occasional Malagasy anncts. When tuning and listening in SSB, you can hear its characteristic wobbly (frequency agile!) carrier and low audio. I wish the signal was stronger! Sept 8.

5850   USA. WRMI Wave Scan - Okeechobee FL. Caught the last 10 min of this at 1050, good signal with a DX report from the Philippines and an Adrian Peterson story on Radio Australia - Shepparton relaying services to northern Queensland during a cyclone in 2006. Full ID at the end and good wishes from Jeff While. Sept 11.

5875   THAILAND. VoA - Ban Dung. Last few minutes of the Korean service to EAs with s/off 2100, good signal, Sept 8.

5910   FRANCE. R. Japan - Issoudun. Here in south eastern Australia, this regular wintertime 49mb transmitter is still coming through during our afternoons, even at this late stage in the year! Noted at 0440 with a fair to poor signal till s/off 0500, Sept 15.

5915   ZAMBIA. ZNBC - Lusaka. Radio 1 network relay in local languages, a long talk or speech at 2102. African songs and chants from 2109, with a good signal, Sept 8.

5930   GERMANY. Bible Voice - Nauen. Currently the only station using this frequency and only operating for 15 min daily! Arabic to ME, 2000-2015, good signal, Sept 14.

5960   ALBANIA. CRI - Cerrik. English to Eu 2110, fair signal, Sept 8.

6090   ETHIOPIA. Amhara State R. - Addis Ababa. Groovy Afro music with a singer really twisting around (embellishing) the melodic line at 2034. Amharic talkback chat in between songs. Monster signal on Sept 14.

6110   ETHIOPIA. R. Fana - Addis Ababa. Discussion program in Amharic at 2042, ID at 2043, upbeat Horn of Africa pop styled music. Excellent signal, and PBS Xizang's 2050 s/on was barely heard under Fana, Sept 14.

6115   PHILIPPINES. R. Veritas Asia - Palauig. Noted at 2059 with full English ID before starting the Mandarin service to EAs at 2100, fair signal Sept 14.

6180   BRAZIL. R. Nacional Brasília - Brasília. Mainly talk but occasional songs at 2104 to past 2115. Fair reception this morning. This signal is via the Antarctic path and is typical of propagation on this band as we approach the southern hemisphere vernal equinox (on Sept 22). At this time of day, there is just enough daylight and darkness across the South Pole to allow for signals to propagate between Australia and Brazil.

7259.93   VANUATU. R. Vanuatu - Port Vila. F/in 0500 with Bislama news, fair signal, Sept 15.

7295   FRANCE. R. Algerienne - Issoudun. Qur'an at 0505, good signal, Sept 15.

7415   ASCENSION IS. Dandal Kura R. - Ascension. Talks and songs in Kanuri at 0410, ID 0412. A message in English heard at 0413 and many mentions of Boko Haram, fair signal, Sept 15.

11645   MADAGASCAR. R. Dabanga - Talata-Volonondry. Definitely on this frequency at the moment (and not on 11650 kHz as currently shown in the Aoki list), s/on 0430 with a fair signal. But much stronger here on 13800  also via Talata….until 0530 when 13800 changes to the Nauen txer site and the signal drops down considerably. Sept 15

15345.16   ARGENTINA. R. Argentina al Exterior - General Pacheco. Spanish to Eu with Argentinian Salon songs at 2210, a long string of anncts at 2215, then back to passionate Argentinian love songs. Weekends have the relay of the domestic R. Nacional service. Weak signal and the audio was a bit scratchy on Sept 8.

73 and have a great weekend everyone,

Rob Wagner VK3BVW

  1. Great log. Some of these frequencies I have been able to tune here in Southern Brazil. By the way, great rig you've got. I use an old SONY ICF-2010.
