DX QUICK TIPS - September 9, 2018
September 9, 2018
This weekend, my next door neighbours have been away on a brief holiday. Result: The noise on the shortwave bands was reduced significantly! YAY!!! It's amazing what one can hear when RF interference is absent. Plenty of weak signal DX was noted mostly during daylight hours, including frequencies normally heard during our mid-winter season here (May - July). So this weekend has been a pleasant DX surprise for me. May my dear neighbours take more holidays in the future!!! ๐
๐ 4840 USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. Unusually early fade in for this time of year at 0555 (3:55pm here) with American preaching. Weak signal at first but improved quickly by 0625. Sept 8.
๐ 5020 SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. Unusually early fade in for this time of year at 0625 (4:25 pm here) with music programming and chit-chat in English. Weak audio initially but improved later. Sept 8.
๐ 5040 CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Fading in at 0515 (3:15 pm here) with English to CAm with Havana Portraits. A weak signal but great to hear it still coming through well after the Southern Hemisphere’s winter DX season has passed. R. Rebelde 5025 also noted fading in at this time. Sept 9.
6155 AUSTRIA. R. Oesterreich Int’l - Moosbrunn. German to Eu at 0516 with commentary, a fair signal, Sept. 9.
๐ 7570 USA. WRMI/Overcomer Ministry - Okeechobee FL. Nice to hear the signal (but not the content!) at f/in 0350 (1:50pm here), still hanging in there even though winter afternoon reception conditions have long passed. A weak signal, Sept 9.
๐ 9395 USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Not DX for our US readers, but here in southeastern Australia it was good to catch this at 0415 (2:15 pm here) with classic rock hits such as “Got To Get You Into My Life”. ID at 0420 as “We’ll be back to the music in moments on WRMI, Radio Miami International”. Weak signal but pleasing to hear in the early afternoon at this time of year. Sept 9.
๐ 9410 UZBEKISTAN. BBC - Tashkent. English WS current affairs program to SAs at 0105 (11:05 am here). A weak signal but interesting for middle-of-the-day reception in Spring over an all-daylight path where reception at this time can be marginal at best on 9 mHz. Sept 9.
๐ 9510 UZBEKISTAN. BBC - Tashkent. Hindi to SAs at 0120 (11:20am here), weak but readable signal (see comments for 9410). Sept 9.
๐ 9525 FRANCE. R. Dengรช Welat - Issoudun. Some wild Kurdish music at 0429, then a talk with background music. Signed off 0457. Weak signal but able to hear it on a day when the noise was well down. Sept 9.

๐ 9790 CUBA. CRI - Quivican. Cantonese service to WNAm at 0447, fair signal. No QRM from the co-channel RFI-Issoudun to EAf, although a check on the Qatar KiwiSDR reveals that RFI is indeed heard in that part of the world….with no sign of CRI. Sept 9.

๐ 9860 VATICAN. R. Japan - SM Galeria. English to WAf at 0502 with news on the recent Hokkaido earthquake. Japan is really having some bad luck with recent floods, typhoons and earthquakes. One of my daughters lives in Osaka, so I have a constant eye on natural disasters in Japan. A very good signal on Sept 9.

Rob, I always enjoy your wonderful blogspots. Keep them coming! Regarding your local QRN from the lovely new neighbours...have you ever investigated more closely to find out what might be creating it? Perhaps an easy fix? Around here I have had the neighbours let me swap out their low voltage switching-supplied halogen track lights for normal AC ones. They've also let me install zero-noise light dimmers. Maybe there is something similar next door there...? Steve VE7SL 73
ReplyDeleteHi Steve, thanks for dropping by the blog and leaving your kind comments! Over the months I have noticed a variety of different noises being picked up. As we have now entered Spring here, one especially loud noise appears to have disappeared, so perhaps relating to heating? Don't know. It sounds to me like there could be a few (many?) devices involved in RFI. And, of course, noise levels are generally increasing all over the wider neighbourhood, so it's not involving just the people next door, as far as I can tell.
DeleteI have ferrite in the lines already, but still have a few tricks up my sleeves which I am yet to try....and which I must get around to deploying eventually! Over the past few months, we have been travelling and had some part time work has come along, so investigations have stopped for the moment. Also, I've been mucking around with FT8 for some of the time, and that mode seems to cut through the noise like a knife through butter!! :-) Cheers, mate. Rob VK3BVW
