15 THINGS I’VE LEARNED
ABOUT FT8

It's been nearly one year since I started exploring the hugely popular weak signal digital mode known as FT8. About nine months ago on the MEDXR blog, I produced a short video detailing some background into the issues in setting up the communication protocol between the computer and the rig.

Later, I wrote a longer and more detailed post about a few of the technical specifications behind the FT8 software. I also spent some time explaining how FT8 and WSPR modes can be utilised by shortwave listeners who might be keen to explore something new. That article is called FT8, WSPR and the Shortwave Listener.

Then several months ago, I wrote another post called QSLs....Real Paper QSLs! displaying a selection of cards I had received resulting from contacts made on FT8.

And now, having made more than 1600 QSO during the year on FT8, I have prepared the little video below that reflects on a few of the things I've learned over that time. It is meant for hams who may just be starting out using this digital mode. It's not full of "highfalutin" technical language, but rather just a few random thoughts thrown together that may help others. Any constructive criticism is welcome.  https://youtu.be/BcInFASJUd4

  1. Most interesting post about FT8 I ever read. Some amateurs complain you don't need special techniques anymore to work the DX. This might be true in some occasions were F/H mode is used. However, many DX stations just starting with FT8 are not in F/H mode and it is really a matter of good techniques to reach them with your signal. You did a excellent job explaining. I hope you don't mind I will place a link to your post on my blogpost. Your blog is already in my blogroll of course. 73, Bas

    1. Bas, thanks so much for your comments and kind feedback. Much appreciated. Yes, by all means link my blog post to your own blog, thanks for that. I have just checked out your blog at https://pe4bas.blogspot.com/ and you have some fabulous posts, too. Other hams should check out PE4BAS's blog as well. Good stuff! Best 73 my friend! Rob VK3BVW

  2. Excellent. Any chance of a text summary of key points? I am sure I am not alone in often not having the patience to sit through a 15 minute video.
