THE TOP TEN OF 2020 & 2021
(THE COVID YEARS!)
In the past, I have done an annual "Top Ten" of the most popular posts on the Mount Evelyn DX Report. BUT.....last year I completely forgot to write about the most popular posts in 2020. Why? Oh, I dunno! I didn't catch COVID and I don't have COVID brain, so I can't blame the pandemic.
Like everyone, the past two years have been difficult, unsettling, and somewhat confusing. And for some of our readers to this blog, close family and friends have been lost to the disease. It's been tough. Very tough. What 2022 holds for us is anyone's guess. But it can probably be summed up in this little cartoon:
So, this year I decided to resurrect the Top Ten most popular posts of the MEDXR blog across both '20 and '21. We will call it the COVID YEARS TOP TEN. 😲 I find it really interesting to see which of the posts from this blog capture the interest of our readers. In order of popularity, here are the "most-clicked-on" posts from the past two years.
THE TOP 10 MEDXR BLOG POSTS FROM 2020 & 2021
- NOISE, NOISE, EVERYWHERE NOISE
A discussion on the propagation of noise plus some suggestions for tracking down and resolving noise issues on the HF bands at home. This is an introduction for shortwave listeners.

We are all aware of the monumental impact that the Internet has brought to the world. The all-pervasive presence of the web has affected just about everything we do and will continue thus forevermore. Even the simple act of switching on a radio and tuning around to listen for a distant shortwave station thousands of miles away now has Internet options. Who would have thought this just 30 years ago?

In our very popular Retro Receiver Review series, this look back at a classic receiver from the 1970s received thousands of "hits" when it was first published on this blog. We discuss the unique Wadley loop design and assess the performance. Plus there are two videos that take an in-depth look at the receiver.

The Allied/Realistic SX-190 was a general coverage solid-state receiver, well regarded in the early 70s for its performance. And it's a great looking rig in the shack!

When shortwave listeners write a reception report to a broadcaster, working out the SINPO code can be confusing. This video blog post takes a closer look at the code, points out some of the pitfalls when using it, and how we might improve it for greater accuracy.
https://medxr.blogspot.com/2020/01/a-closer-look-at-sinpo-video.html - SPOTLIGHT: BBC ASCENSION ISLAND RELAY STATION
Ascension Island is the ideal site for the BBC’s transmissions into west and central Africa, and previously into South America. If we visited Ascension, what would we find at this BBC antenna farm?
https://medxr.blogspot.com/2021/05/spotlight-bbc-ascension-island-relay.html - ANTENNAS....BIG LOOP ANTENNAS!
It seems that these days, small loop antennas for use on the HF bands are just as popular as ever. Then there are the large wire loops. And I do mean LARGE! But it helps if you have the real estate to hoist these things into the air.

So there are our Top 10 blog posts for 2020 and 2021. A total of 79 blog posts for the two years (not counting this one!), so there is plenty of reading with lots of interesting items about shortwave radio. And, take a look back at some of the other posts as well, just in case you missed something!
As always, thank you for your support of the Mount Evelyn DX Report throughout the past two years. Without your "views", "likes", "shares" and "retweets", I doubt that I would have continued to write this blog. I appreciate your generous words of encouragement and friendship. It is always much appreciated.
My very best wishes for the New Year. May you and your family have a safe, healthy and peaceful year ahead. May you continue to enjoy this fabulous radio hobby.
73 and good DX to you all!
