Suffer from noise? Check this out!

I have just spent a fabulous weekend at the North American-based online SWLFest, a conference for everyone interested in radio. There were plenty of informative and entertaining talks and discussions, and it was an opportunity to catch up with wonderful people who love their radio hobby.

In the final session today, I shared a link that offers heaps of advice and information on how to solve RF noise problems. But.....I suddenly realised that I have not shared this link with the MEDXR blog readers here!

It's a funny name - QRM.GURU - "Resolving interference for amateur radio" - but as the website describes:

"QRM.guru has been developed to assist Radio Amateurs in dealing with RF noise and interference. This is an educational and reference resource.......Much of the content has been derived from various sources, including the public domain, published works and project work by developers and radio amateurs. All references to published works and project work are acknowledged.

The objectives of QRM.guru are to provide an integrated online educational resource to assist all Radio Amateurs in:

  • better understanding RF noise (EMI) sources that impact on their enjoyment of the hobby;
  • providing a series of tools, techniques and guides to assist in locating and reducing or eliminating noise sources;
  • providing guidance on how to select consumer devices that comply with regulations and do not emit unwanted RF noise;
  • encouraging radio hams and clubs to collaborate in reducing noise and promoting the hobby;
  • developing and utilising our technical skills to resolve issues that impact on our enjoyment of the hobby, even when the interference is not of our responsibility;
  • assisting VK Amateurs in getting more enjoyment out of the hobby."

Although designed for Australian hams in Australian conditions and situations, the problem of RF interference is a global issue. So I think that most of the resources contained in this website will be relevant to hams and shortwave listeners around the world who live in noisy RF environments. Through a library of articles and videos, you will find sections on:

  • basic diagnosis
  • locating the noise source
  • steps to take for noise reduction in the radio shack
  • techniques for resolving noise
  • power line noise
  • dealing with neighbours
  • information on solar panels and inverters
  • templates and forms to help you keep track of ongoing problems
  • and much more!

There is also an interesting section called Case Studies where RF noise stories and solutions are collated. They make enlightening reading!

If you haven't checked out QRM.GURU yet, do so. It may be able to help in your own situation. Highly recommended!

73 and good DX to you all,
