REACH BEYOND'S ANTENNAS AT KUNUNURRA
Reach Beyond's Antennas
at Kununurra, Western Australia
Many readers will remember the radio station HCJB, broadcasting from Quito, Ecuador. Indeed, my first QSL card came from this station in 1967, and I was a regular listener to the weekly DX Partyline show. The station began operations on December 25, 1931.
Although HCJB's global voice from Ecuador has been absent for some years, the station still lives as a shortwave presence in Australia. With studios in Kilsyth, Victoria (about 15 minutes drive from my home) and high-powered 100 kW transmitters at Kununurra, in far north Western Australia, the HCJB of old has transformed itself into the Reach Beyond ministry.
The Kununurra transmitter site is ideally situated to beam a potent signal into Asia and the Pacific through 25 languages, offering religious insights, health messages and educational programming. Eighteen massive towers support six antenna arrays.
Below, this promotional YouTube video is well worth watching if you enjoy checking out shortwave transmitting antennas. At various points throughout its six minutes, the video shows some detailed aerial and ground shots of the magnificent antennas and the surrounding bushland:
