NEW STATION - SHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA
NEW STATIONSHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA
Since July 7, I have been monitoring the new SHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA, a station operating on 4835 and 2310 kHz. My observations have covered periods between 0400 and 1200 UTC. A strong signal is being observed on both frequencies, but, of course, 2310 kHz is best heard at night.
The station is located about 10km north of Bendigo, a regional city in Victoria. The licensee is David Stuart, and he writes:
I have wanted to do something like this for a while, and I finally got hold of the old Alice Springs frequencies. It is a long story but won't bother you here with it, but they have gone through a couple of owners since they were discontinued by the ABC and by mutual agreement the ownership has passed on to me.
David has recently moved to this location from Melbourne, onto a 60-acre farm with plenty of room for antennas and no neighbours to worry about. Using homebrew transmitters, the output is 200 watts into dipoles. The dipoles for 4835 kHz are east-west at 60 ft and north-south at 30 ft. For 2310 kHz, there is an east-west antenna at 60ft but David reports that he is trying to get it higher and may also experiment with a vertical.
At the moment the station is just in the proof of performance stage and will have more development..... Programming will be mostly music but stuff that is not heard a lot on the normal stations and I will try to have a lot of variety but I know you can not please everybody all the time. Also some technical talks and things. The idea is to have it all automated so I do not become a slave to it and load programs and just keep an occasional ear on it but have the option to go live if I want but who knows how it will evolve.
The station ID is Shortwave Australia, but seems to be only announced occasionally. It is purely a hobby for David and there is no commercial interest.
Further details as they come to hand.
73 and good DX to you all.
