DX QUICK TIPS
August 13, 2022

SOME THOUGHTS ON FACEBOOK

Before we launch into my DX tips for this week, let me chat about Facebook (a necessary evil!).

FB advised that I was getting very close to the maximum number of "friends" that I'm allowed - apparently, this limit is set at 5000. I was up at 4960....I didn't realise I was so popular! πŸ˜‚ 😜  FB suggested I "thin the herd" (my terminology, not theirs!). I soon found that this is a long and laborious task. And then who should I boot off of my friends' list? Not an easy decision to make. Finally, I came up with the following exit selection criteria:

  • Mad Trump supporters who post on their feeds nothing else except how their election was stolen
  • Other conspiracy theorists who constantly peddle all sorts of rubbish, especially fans of some weird woman called Marjorie Taylor Green and a bunch of her friends (hmmm.... there are lots of conspiracy theorists out there!)
  • Those who say that we must arm everyone with guns!! You are preaching to the wrong person! We solved that problem here in Australia decades ago!
  • People whose news feeds only show re-shared stuff from other feeds. What's the point in having a friend who doesn't seem to have an original thought? Some "friends" re-share between 30-50 posts per day and write nothing about themselves!
  • Posters who write nasty sexist and racist stuff
  • People who try to convince me that their religion is better than everyone else's
  • FB "friends" from Russia who claim the Ukrainian war and civilian murders are a "special operation"
  • And.....shapely young ladies who have other things that are less than pure on their minds!
So, I'm wading through my FB friends. If you think you possibly fall into one or more of the categories above, you might want to do me a favour and "unfriend" me....before I get to you!
If you like the radio posts, you can still follow me without befriending me.

Now, on with the show!

3250   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Pyongyang. 1114, Korean commentaries, fair signal, Aug 7.

3310   BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cochabamba. 1118, weak signal in possibly Quechua with what sounded like preaching (Sunday morning Cochabamba time), Faded by 1130 UTC (7:30 am Bolivian time), Aug 7.

3320   D.P.R.KOREA. PBS Pyongyang Pansong - Pyongyang. 1132 Korean opera, fair signal, Aug 7.

3325   INDONESIA. Voice of Indonesia - Palangkaraya. 1134 Mandarin with pop song selections and anncts, fair signal and // 4750 where it was stronger, Aug 7.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 4775.04   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma, JunΓn. Andean-flavoured ballads and rapid Spanish talk between announcers. Not strong, but the best I've heard it so far this year. Aug 7.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 4810   PERU. R. Logos - Chazuta, Tarapoto, San Martin. 0957 Andean flute music, anncts 1000 and possibly news. Almost continuous LA pops from around 1012 with very few anncts. Started off weakly but strengthened by 1020. Best listening in LSB due to the booming STANAG on 4810.5 kHz. Gone by 1055. Tough listening and rarely heard here these days - first time this year! Aug 9.

9265   USA. WINB - Red Lion PA. 2255 wide vibrato organ playing, 2259 WINB ID, 2300 American proselytising. Fair signal, Aug 12.

9405   PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Bocaue. 2250 Mandarin to EAs with Radio Liangyou programming, weak signal, Aug 10.

9440   EGYPT. R. Cairo - Abis
. 2215 to s/off 2240 English to WEu. The usual serious distortion and hum/whine on the signal. A selection of music and commentaries that could have possibly been informative if not for the poor modulation! See (below) the hum created by the multiple equidistant harmonics on both sides of the carrier frequency as it appeared on the Cyprus remote Kiwi SDR waterfall! A fair to poor signal strength here at Mount Evelyn on Aug 10.

Cairo's hum as seen on the Cyrpus Kiwi SDR.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 9730   MYANMAR. Myanma R. - Yegu, Yangon. 1105 Burmese with National network. Music and talk programming with Burmese pops, before suddenly launching into Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong's "Cheek to Cheek" (!!). 1120 - "Myanma Radio" station jingle. Heard under the slightly stronger co-channel KNLS Mandarin service, but pretty easy to copy. News reports and commentaries from 1130. At 1200, no frequency change to the scheduled 5985. Instead, 9730 continued with commentaries, interviews and occasional short musical interludes. Back into Burmese pops at 1220 to past 1240 when I stopped monitoring. Co-channel QRM at 1200 from CRI's English to SEAs. Aug 9.

9795   PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Iba. 1145 Vietnamese to SEAs, preaching until s/off 1200, good signal and no siren jamming (for a change!), Aug 9.

πŸ‘ 9800   GERMANY. AWR - Nauen. 2145 to s/off 2200 in Twi to WAf with a discussion, then closing music by Bach. Fair signal, Aug 10. Twi (pronounced 'chwee') (a.k.a. Ashanti Twi) is a dialect of the Akan language spoken by about 7 million people in the southern two-thirds of Ghana, parts of Cote d'Ivoire and even found in parts of Togo. Like most languages spoken south of the Sahara, Twi is a tonal language having three main tones - high, middle and low.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 11780   BRAZIL. R. Nacional AmazΓ΄nia - Brasilia. 2315 Portuguese, two announcers talking over each other plus telephone talkback to add to the listener’s confusion, fair signal but pleasing for mid-morning reception, Aug 12.

  1. Your criteria is bang-on Rob. I’ve found that the best way to avoid FB problems is to not request or accept any friends at all. One can still enjoy all of the group benefits.. VE7SL 73

    1. Thanks, Steve. I'm not sure that having 4960 "friends" has been very beneficial for my mental health! hahaha. Cheers, mate. Rob.
