DX QUICK TIPS AND VIDEOS
May 4, 2025

Well, it finally happened. I've be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

No, not really!

Being an all-Apple household these days, I've been waiting for a fantastic company like SDRPlay to provide good, reliable Mac OS software for use with a Software Defined Radio. Also, I needed to purchase a current model M4 MacBook Pro to power the SDR. As of several weeks ago, I now have the laptop, the software and an SDRPlay RSPduo receiver.

I am still learning how to get the best from the new setup. But I am also enjoying the process immensely. It's great fun!

So, what's happened to all the other radios in my shack? Nothing. They are still there. And in fact, they form the bulk of the logs listed below

RIGS: SDRPlay RSPDuo, Yaesu FTDX 3000, Kenwood TS2000, Kenwood R5000, Yaesu FRG100, Tecsun PL-680

ANTENNAS: Horizontal Sky Loop 80m long, 10 MHz Delta Loop, 14 MHz Double Bazooka, 5/8λ Centre-fed vertical for 21 MHz and above.

2310   AUSTRALIA. Shortwave Australia - Bendigo, VIC. 1120 with tapes of old pops programming from the ABC. A strong signal in this 120mb outlet. // 4835 kHz is even stronger, May 2.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2355   AUSTRALIA. 4TRP - Townsville. 1100 Old rock hits. Weak signal in the noise. This is a new Australian shortwave station, currently very low power (60 W) but licensed to 1 kw. The email address is 4trpradio@gmail.com. Thanks to ARDXC and Craig Seager for the tip-off. Apr 17.

3480   KOREA REP. Voice of the People - Goyang. 1114 Korean commentaries. Occasional music interludes. Fair signal and // 3930 also heard. Apr 19.

⭐⭐ 4775   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma. 1015 Peruvian songs with a rock flavour, punctuated by echo-style anncts. Faded by 1135. A weak signal and not regularly heard here these days. Perhaps it will improve as we approach winter in the next few months. Apr 24.

⭐⭐ 4820   PERU. R.Senda Cristiana - San Luís, Arequipa. 1030 Spanish. Many anncts and talks, some with background Peruvian music. 1045 Several songs, one was of pretty rough quality! 1056 A long preaching segment, which went right past 1100 without a pause. 1120 Change of speaker, 1123 gospel song. A weak signal at first, but strengthened to a fair level by 1050. In typical Peruvian propagation, it began fading by 1140 (6:40 am in Arequipa). Rarely heard here at Mount Evelyn. Apr 24.

5020   SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. 0845 in the English domestic service. Fair signal but does improve later in the evening. Apr 27.

⭐⭐ 5855.6 USB  KOREA REP. HLL Seoul Meteorological R. - Seoul-Gangseo. 2012 Korean weather reports. Good signal, Apr 22.

5900   BULGARIA. Bible Voice - Sofia. 1950 to 2002 s/off Arabic to ME. American preaching. Fair signal, Apr 22.

5915   MYANMAR. Myanma R. - Naypyidaw. 1132 Burmese with an extended talk/commentary. 1139 Burmese pop song. Fair signal. Nothing heard on 5985.  Apr 20.

⭐⭐ 5995   MALI. R. Mali - Kati. Interesting reception! First noted at 0705 with French (not Bambara) discussions and occasional music. Very weak signal but confirmed via the remote SDR in Alicante, Spain. Then it disappeared, not returning before the sign-off. We are more likely to catch this long path, West African station in late May and June, and usually hear it up to 0800 sign off. Will be interesting to see what the reception is like in the next month or so. Apr 18.

⭐⭐ 6070   CANADA. CFRX - Toronto. 0915 with a weak signal. Hopefully, this will improve as we approach winter in the next month. The video below also recorded Radio Nikkei - Nigara, Japan on 6055 kHz at a good signal. Apr 27.

6100   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Kanggye. 1103 Korean domestic service. Commentaries and occasional songs. Fair signal and // 11680 also fair and in the clear, Apr 21.

⭐⭐ 6185   MEXICO. XEPPM Radio Educatión - Mexico City. 0744 UTC with musical selections. Always a difficult catch here at Mount Evelyn. The signal was weak, but will hopefully improve in with coming winter months. May 2.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 7289.91 INDONESIA. RRI - Nabire, Central Papua. 0905 with extended broadcast in Indonesian. Chanting recitations and hymns in a seemingly Western Christian religious service, punctuated with the occasional “Amen”! I presumed these were prayers and preaching for Easter Saturday services. There were long pauses between content, indicating a live broadcast. The signal was fair until 1000 when it was squashed by an all-powerful co-channel CNR 1-Beijing. I continued listening via the Jakarta Kiwi SDR, where the signal was fair but quite readable, and CNR was weaker. The service finished around 1030. Then, quiet ballad selections followed. The transmission was still going when I tuned out at 1045, long past their usual scheduled s/off. Apr 19.

9320    GUAM. KTWR - Merizo. 1345 Korean to EAs. Fair signal, Apr 17.

9400    PHILIPPINES. FEBC R. Liangyou - Iba. 1345 Mandarin preaching to EAs, good signal, Apr 17.

9455    TAIWAN. Furusato no Kaze - Paochung. S/on 1330 Japanese to EAs. Interview and music interlude. Fair signal, Apr 17.

9570    SOUTH KOREA. KBS World R. - Kimjae. 1325 English to SEAs. Good signal, Apr 17.

9655   ASCENSION IS. KBS World R - Ascension. 2035 French to NAf to s/off 2100. Fair signal, Apr 22.

9665   CHINA. CNR 5 Cross-Strait R. - Beijing. S/on exactly at 2055 in Mandarin to Taiwan. Booming signal, Apr 22.

9670   TAIWAN. R. Dáp Lòi Sông Núi -  Paochung. 1230 exactly (regular as clockwork!) s/on with clear IDs and commentaries. Good signal except for adjacent channel QRM from the booming CNR 5 Cross-Strait R. on 9665., Apr 18.

9820    CHINA. Beibu Bay R. - Nanning. 1315 Zhuang language with ballads and chat. Weak signal and heavy co-channel QRM from CNR 2-Xian, which is a pity. // 5050 also heard and in the clear there, Apr 17.

9960   VANUATU. R. Vanuatu - Emten Lagoon. 0615 in Bislama. Ballads and community anncts. Pleasant listening, good signal, Apr 18.

11965.05  GUAM. KTWR - Agana. *1100-1116* English to SEAs with a good signal. Apr 18.

15450   PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Bocaue. *1100-1115* Rakhine language to SEAs. IS, ID and anncts, then a song. Rakhine (a.k.a. Arakanese) is related to Burmese, primarily spoken by the Rakhine people of Rakhine State, western Myanmar. This language service runs Fr/Sa/Su only. Fair signal, Apr 25.

17660   FRANCE. R. France Int'l - Issoudun. 0553 UTC in Swahili to EAf. Good signal, Apr 26.
