STATION NEWS:
Nigeria Watch
The wheels of progress are turning as the Voice of Nigeria signs contracts to restore and renovate the dilapidated Lugbe shortwave transmitting facilities in Abuja. The restoration project is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s international broadcasting capacity, enhance cross-border communication, and reinforce the country’s role in Africa’s media and information landscape.
In a lengthy article on the VON website published several days ago, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated:
“As we commence the revival of the largest and most powerful transmitting station on the African continent, now equipped with the most modern, digitally compatible technology. Upon completion of this project, the fully reactivated VON transmitters will transform the landscape of terrestrial broadcasting and position VON as a respected brand in global radio broadcasting for good.
“It is my expectation that the Voice of Nigeria will continue to uphold its policy of being a pro-Nigeria and pan-African station dedicated to telling the positive stories coming out of Nigeria and the African continent.”
Tellingly, the minister is reported to have added:
“I therefore urge the contractor to not only execute the contract within the agreed timeline but also to ensure that the highest standards and quality are maintained and clearly evident. The VON technical team must demonstrate a high level of diligence and competence in supervising the execution of this project, as well as in ensuring its sustainability through an effective maintenance culture,”
There's a very good reason why he would mention the VON technical team! It is widely known that the transmitters and antennas were commissioned as a state-of-the-art facility in 2012. However, within a few years, a lack of proper maintenance and technical expertise caused the facility to decline rapidly, leading to the closure of the shortwave services. It is hoped that the revitalised facility will have a longer lifespan this time around!

DX QUICK TIPS
⭐⭐ 2310 AUSTRALIA. Shortwave Australia – Wee Waa, NSW. Aug 25, 0741 Old radio tapes of the U.S. AM station WDRC, Hartford. You hear all sorts of eclectic programming on this station. I’d love to know where he gets the tapes from! Runs // 4835 and good signals on both freqs. Correspondence this week from station owner Dave, VK3ASE, indicates that for the past two months, he has been running both channels at 30 watts due to high power bills (normally exceeding 100 watts).
2500 USA. WWVH – Hawaii. Aug 25, 0746. Listing this here only because it was interesting to hear such a strong signal at this time (sunset that day was 0753 UTC). Propagation on the 120mb is usually not this early here in Melbourne - 5:46 pm.
3945 VANUATU. R. Vanuatu - Emten Lagoon. Aug 25, 0735 Bislama anncts with many borrowed English words. Local community news. Good signal, Aug 21.
⭐⭐ 4810 PERU. R. Logos - Chazuta, Tarapoto, San Martin. 0803 Pleasant surprise to hear this so early. Andean flute and accompaniment. 0806 - ID and anncts, then himno nacional del Peru. 0810 - Folk songs. Fair signal and best in LSB to avoid the STANAG, Aug 19.
The small village of Chazuta is famed throughout the region for its elegant pottery. It has artisan workshops, a small museum showcasing pre-Inca funerary urns, and a port on the Río Huallaga with great fishing. Nearby are the impressive 40m, three-level Tununtunumba waterfalls and the Chazutayacu thermal baths.

⭐⭐ 4940 VENEZUELA. Estación 4940 - SW Venezuela. Aug 25. First heard at 0712 with a very weak signal, but it strengthened somewhat by the time I retuned at 0731. Active atmospheric noise made listening challenging, perhaps it was a religious talk by a female announcer. This station is rarely heard at Mount Evelyn and never at this time! So, this reception in the Kurth Kiln forest is stunning (well before the 0753 sunset on that day!).
⭐⭐ 4955 PERU. R. Cultural Amauta - Huanta. 1110 Spanish. Appeared to be reading out greetings with mentions of Huanta and many declarations of “Buenos dias” at the end of each greeting. 1119 folk song. Fair to poor signal and faded by 1125, August 23.
5045 AUSTRALIA. Bay Islands R. - Russell Is, QLD. 1047 ID and continuous electronic pops. Fair signal, Aug 23.
6185 MEXICO. XEPPM R. Educación – Mexico City. Aug 25, 0644 with Mexican songs, an impressive signal for this time of day. First noted weakly at 0612.
⭐⭐ 7205 INDONESIA. RRI- Location unknown. 10:31:44 - Carrier on. 10:33:03 - Cut in the middle of news reports with no sign on anncts. Pro 3 programming. Good signal, Aug 18. Has been on this frequency every day since. UPDATE: Not running 24 hours – signs off anytime after 0030 and 0200 UTC (times vary). Today (August 30), sign-off was at 01:47:50 UTC.
7225 CHINA. Sichuan Ethnic R. - Chengdu. 1015 Nuosu language (listed) (a.k.a. Sichuan Yi - spoken in southwestern China). Commentary with continuous background instrumental music. Fair signal. This is not the often-listed ‘Yui’ language, which is a distinct language spoken in Chimbu Province by an indigenous group in the mountainous central highlands of Papua New Guinea! Aug 23. More on this mix-up in the two languages at: this recent post.
⭐⭐ 17790 TAIWAN. R. NUG - Paochung. 0200 s/on Burmese with many IDs and then news and commentaries. Interestingly, one announcer ID’ed several times as “Radio Noo-Gee” (with the ‘G’ sounded as in ‘geyser’), which I had never heard before. Another announcer spelled out the letters as in “Radio N-U-G”. Fair to poor signal, and returning to shortwave after a relatively long absence. Aug 25.
