RADIO SINGAPORE ON MEDIUMWAVE - ARCHIVE RECORDING FROM 1973

RADIO SINGAPORE ON MEDIUMWAVE

ARCHIVE RECORDING FROM 1973

The recording below of Radio Singapore on 790 kHz in the mediumwave band was made on October 13, 1973. You will hear the station sign-off announcement and the national anthem. This recording was made using a Lafayette HA230 valve receiver and a small MW loop antenna. The distance the signal travelled was 6,081 km.

In the 60s and 70s, Radio Singapore operated on a range of frequencies in the mediumwave and shortwave bands. As part of the 1975 Geneva Frequency Plan, this 790 kHz channel moved to 792 kHz on November 23, 1978.

Over time, FM channels were introduced and became popular with listeners. Suddenly, with very little fanfare, the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation ceased all its mediumwave outlets on December 31, 1993.

A disgruntled listener complained about the sudden closure in the
January 8, 1994, edition of
The Straits Times newspaper.
Does this sound familiar....suddenly disappearing stations?
This is something we have seen in recent years on shortwave, too!

73 and good DX!
