THE TOP MEDXR POSTS OF 2025

THE TOP MEDXR POSTS
OF 2025

Thank you for your support of the Mount Evelyn DX Report throughout 2025. Without your "views", "likes", "shares", and "retweets", I doubt I would have continued writing this blog. I appreciate your generous words of encouragement and friendship. It is always much appreciated.

It is fascinating to see which posts on this blog captured our readers' interest. In category order, here are the "most-clicked-on" posts from the past twelve months.

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL POSTS!

Without a doubt, two posts caused quite a stir and generated the most discussion. These were about listeners who use the Internet to access Kiwi and Web SDRs to gather information for their reception reports. They compile the report and send it off to the station, requesting a QSL card or eQSL. I listed many reasons why this was a problem (....for me) and why I don't think this is in the true spirit of the hobby. The first post ended up being shared in DX newsletters and online. The second post, in which readers shared their opinions on this topic, was equally important. You can read both posts here:

INDEPTH BROADCASTING RESEARCH

As a writer for The Spectrum Monitor magazine, I get to research the past and current situation of shortwave broadcasting. Four detailed posts examined the importance of shortwave radio in the Philippines and Indonesia. These were well received by both TSM and MEDXR readers, and I thank them for their interest in my research. Read the four posts here:

RETRO RECEIVERS

In our ongoing Retro Receiver Review series, we look back at classic receivers from years past. Once again, Craig Seager VK2HBT has taken a close look at the very popular Sony ICF-6800W, a rig released in 1980. I took the fabulous Yaesu FRG100 receiver, a 1990s-era device, and gave it a spin out in the great Aussie bush with considerable success. Also, I made a brief video on the mid-1970s classic Panasonic DR-48 in action. Expect more Retro Reviews in 2026.

PROPAGATION

Long path propagation is a much misunderstood concept amongst the SWL DXing fraternity. During my winter months, I got to observe some classic LP prop. I delve into why and how this phenomenon occurs with some recorded video examples and maps. Late in 2025, the VOACAP propagation prediction software got a significant facelift!

DXING OUTDOORS

These days, I don't get out as much as I used to, but I just LOVE DXing away from home! Nothing beats DXing in the mountains, parks or by the sea. Armed with my (almost) new SDRPlay RSPduo receiver, I have really enjoyed some great listening this year. I also put together a little article on the ins and outs of outdoor DXing.

SPOTLIGHT ON.......SOME ODD STUFF! 😃

Here are a few blog posts that capture the imagination and interest of our readers! Especially popular were the Taiwanese numbers station and Australia's JORN over-the-horizon project.

DXING IN THE GOLDEN AGE

I have been reminiscing about my early days in DXing, when stations crowded the bands, and QSLs were plentiful. This has developed into a new series called Opening The Logbook. The first three of these appeared towards the end of this year and take us back 54 years to 1971. I have received some great feedback from long-time DXers and newcomers to the hobby about this series.

So there you have it! A highlights summary of the blog posts for 2025. A total of 53 posts for the year (not counting this one!), so there is plenty of reading with lots of DX tips and interesting items about shortwave radio. It has been a good year! So take a look back at some of the other posts as well, in case you missed something!

My very best wishes for the New Year. May you and your family have a safe, healthy and peaceful year ahead. May you continue to enjoy this fabulous radio hobby.

73 and good DX to you all!
