NEW FREQUENCIES AND DX TIPS
April 24, 2026

NOTE: The MEDXR blog has a new look. There are still a few formatting problems (rendering issues) on some of the 860 + posts, so bear with me. I'll get there eventually! 😊

Since the start of the A26 transmission season, I have been assisting my wife, who has been in the hospital for two weeks and is in ongoing recovery here at home. Along with my other regular responsibilities, it has been a busy time! So, it is only in the past ten days that I have got around to turning on the radios to check out the shortwave bands. Below are mainly new frequencies (NFs) for A26, plus a few other passing observations.

For each new frequency, I have tried to identify the frequency used in the B25 season. But this can be hard because schedules can be complex or drastically changed by the broadcaster, making direct comparisons difficult.

The list is in frequency order. The countries listed are where the transmitter sites are located. Many broadcasters use transmitters in other countries to improve reception in their target zones. For example, the world-famous BBC is currently using this long list of relays for the A26 transmission season: Oman, Ascension Island, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City, and Madagascar, as well as its own transmitters in Woofferton, England!

In most cases, I have listed the sign-on and sign-off times for each broadcast. These are represented by asterisks * before the sign-on time and after the sign-off time. I hope readers will find this information more useful. Comments on signal strength, as noted here at Mount Evelyn, are largely irrelevant and have not been included, except for a few remarks on interference (QRM) from other stations.

Equipment: SDRPlay RSPduo, Yaesu FTDX3000 transceiver, Kenwood R5000 receiver, Yaesu FRG 100 receiver, Kenwood TS2000 transceiver.

Antennas: 80m long horizontal sky loop antenna, a delta loop antenna for 10 MHz, a double bazooka antenna for 14 MHz and a 5/8λ centre-fed vertical for 21 MHz and above.

Abbreviations:

NF = New Frequency for the A26 transmission season

NS = New Site (i.e. a change in relay station for a specific broadcast)

QRM = Interference from another station

// = The same broadcast simultaneously on another frequency, i.e. in parallel.

WS = BBC World Service

AF = Africa. Eu = Europe, As = Asia, ME = Middle East, NAm = North America, CAm = Central America, SAm = South America, Oc = Oceania, AFG = Afghanistan,

N = North, S = South, E = East, W = West

ENAm = Eastern North America, NEAs = North East Asia, etc.

⭐ 3250   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Pyongyang. 1145 Korean orchestral music, heavy tones of Western Romantic era symphonic music. Brahms and Dvorak would have been proud!! Fair to poor signal, Apr 23.

⭐ 5050   CHINA. Voice of Beibu Bay R. - Nanning. I was sitting on this freq when it suddenly popped up out of the mud at 1115 with Vietnamese programming. Soft music in the background. Pleasant, easy listening music from 1134. Fair signal on Apr 23. Learn more about Beibu Bay Radio here.

7355   USA. KNLS - Anchor Point, AK. *1200-1300* English to EAs. NF (ex 9580), Apr 11.

9440   CHINA. CRI - Kunming. *1100-1200* Amoy to SEAs. Additional freq for this service and one hour earlier than B25. Runs // 11875 also heard but not as strong, on a slightly different beam heading. Apr 11.

9490   CHINA. CRI - Nanning. *1030-1130* Khmer to SEAs, NF (ex 17680). Slight QRM from co-channel R. Taiwan Int’l from 1100. Apr 11.

⭐ 9875   TÜRKIYE. VoTürkiye - Emirler. *2030-2130 English to Oc. NF (ex 9610). At 2130 into Italian, not scheduled here at this time. And there appeared to be no apparent change of beam heading,  signal strength did not vary, still beaming to Oc - a bit strange! Then 2200, English, theoretically to Eu and NAm to 2300. Again, no detectable change in azimuth or signal strength for this service. (ex 11785 or a mistake?). Then, 2300 into the unscheduled German. Mind you, this is 1:00 am in Germany…..very helpful!! A strong signal throughout the monitoring period, only marred by weak co-channel QRM from, I suspect, FEBC  signing on at 2300.  Apr 18.

⭐ 12020   VIETNAM. VoV-5 - Son Tay. *1030-1057* Indonesian to SEAs with a strong signal, beaming 177 deg. At 1100, the opening orchestral theme music was played for a few seconds before the signal was suddenly cut off. 15320   TÜRKIYE. VoTürkiye - Emirler. Scheduled *0600-0700* as Hausa to Nigeria and WAf ….but, to my ears, it sounded more like Swahili on this day! Control room screw-up? NF (ex 15235), Apr 16.
